Liberals will use any tragedy like this as an excuse to call for gun control. What should remain as a terrible accident, liberals will use as an opportunity to change into a political issue. Here’s what happened, according to the Idaho Statesman:
Veronica Rutledge and her husband loved everything about guns. They practiced at shooting ranges. They hunted. And both of them, relatives and friends say, had permits to carry concealed firearms. Veronica typically left her Blackfoot home with her gun nestled at her side. So on Christmas morning last week, her husband gave her a present he hoped would make her life more comfortable: a purse with a special pocket for a concealed weapon.
The day after Christmas, she took her new gift with her on a trip with her husband and her 2-year-old son. They headed hundreds of miles north to the end of a country road where Terry Rutledge, her husband’s father, lived. The father-in-law learned of the new purse.
“It was designed for that purpose — to carry a concealed firearm,” Rutledge said in an interview late Tuesday night. “And you had to unzip a compartment to find the handgun.”
On Tuesday morning, that was exactly what Veronica Rutledge’s son did — with the most tragic of outcomes. Veronica, 29, arrived at a nearby Wal-Mart in Hayden with her three nieces and son, her gun “zippered closed” inside her new purse, her father-in-law said. Then, in the back of the store, near the electronics section, the purse was left unattended for a moment.
“An inquisitive 2-year-old boy reached into the purse, unzipped the compartment, found the gun and shot his mother in the head,” Rutledge said. “It’s a terrible, terrible incident.”
The aftermath has been crushing, he said. His son went to the Wal-Mart to collect his nieces and son, and no one now is sure what to say to the boy, who is not doing well.
The mistake here was leaving her purse unattended, especially in the presence of a toddler. I know she grew up around guns, and her family was growing up around them as well, but you can’t trust a two-year-old. I have a two-year-old, and I know how they like to get into things. We always know that when you don’t see him around for any length of time and it’s quiet, it means he’s up to no good and needs to be found immediately, probably in the middle of a giant mess.
Nevertheless, this was a tragic accident, and it will serve as a reminder to gun-owning parents to be much more careful with their belongings.
While liberals will use this accident as an excuse to argue for more gun control, the truth of the matter is that this incident has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment. If the left is so intent on saving lives and preventing accidents like this from happening, maybe they should also call for banning cars on account of reckless drivers.
People die in car accidents everyday. When are we going to do something about it and decide to outlaw cars? Wouldn’t that save children’s lives? Would liberals be okay with outlawing cars and forcing people to walk, bike or use public transportation? There might still be accidents, but to liberals, we’re all a bunch of numbers. There would be fewer accidental deaths, and that’s all that counts.
Should we outlaw private ownership of vehicles, because of how dangerous they are; or, should we still have the right of travel and accept all its risks? Like Thomas Jefferson said, “I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it.”
With the freedom that we have with traveling and with self-defense weapons, there are going to be accidents that happen. Accidents can be the result of carelessness, but sometimes, they’re just accidents, and it’s nobody’s fault. Liberals never really cared about all the people who’ve died in car accidents, but as soon as a child accidentally kills his mother with her gun, they go crazy and try to blame gun owners and the 2nd Amendment.
