The Liberal Anti-Gun Fallacy

It seems as though every tragedy in this country can galvanize Liberals into jumping up on their soapboxes. Liberals have many soapboxes: a woman’s right to choose, anti-death penalty, green living, global warming (sorry, climate change…sorry, what is it called now?), torture, and numerous other issues that when broken down with logic, fall apart like cheap Swedish furniture. Whatever the event, liberals find a way to make it about their pet cause. This time, it’s gun control.

On NBC’s Sunday Night Football, Bob Costas preached to the viewers at home about gun control in the wake of Jovan Belcher’s murder suicide. Costas said this:

“Well, you knew it was coming. In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in Kansas City, that most mindless of sports clichés was heard yet again: Something like this really puts it all in perspective. Well, if so, that sort of perspective has a very short shelf-life since we will inevitably hear about the perspective we have supposedly again regained the next time ugly reality intrudes upon our games…You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from the Kansas City-based writer Jason Whitlock…who today said it so well… ‘Our current gun culture,’ Whitlock wrote, ‘ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.’ Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it. In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions, and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here,’ wrote Jason Whitlock, ‘is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.’”

This kind of argumentation is ridiculous, yet we hear it every single time an act of violence is committed with a gun. The argument goes like this:

  • Guns kill people
  • We need to ban guns (gun control)
  • Without guns, there will be less violence/crime

It’s a flawed argument. It’s the same as a doctor saying: “Well, if you didn’t have that cough, you wouldn’t be so darn sick.” So the doctor goes ahead and treats the cough, and the patient gets better, right? Wrong. The cough is a symptom. Treating the symptom does nothing to stop the disease.

So what is it that Liberals are thinking? Well, I think I can break it down into one idea: They’re not thinking. Liberals look at acts of violence and they see the weapons used in the crime, rather than the person committing the crime. It is a surface level thought process. They see a symptom, and more importantly, they see something they can bleed over. Liberals love to bleed over gun control because they like to feel compassionate, but they don’t want to be bothered with the details. It’s an easy fix.

A simple look at the evidence shows that states that allow citizens to carry concealed weapons have seen drops in crime. According to gunowners.org:

“States which passed concealed carry laws reduced their murder rate by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%.”

“Vermont: one of the safest five states in the country. In Vermont, citizens can carry a firearm without getting permission… without paying a fee… or without going through any kind of government-imposed waiting period. And yet for ten years in a row, Vermont has remained one of the top-five, safest states in the union — having three times received the ‘Safest State Award.’”

“Florida: concealed carry helps slash the murder rates in the state. In the fifteen years following the passage of Florida’s concealed carry law in 1987, over 800,000 permits to carry firearms were issued to people in the state. FBI reports show that the homicide rate in Florida, which in 1987 was much higher than the national average, fell 52% during that 15-year period — thus putting the Florida rate below the national average.”

In addition to those statistics, it is noted that guns are used to defend 80 times more often than they are used to harm.

This surface level thinking is what gets us Obamacare; approximately 1,000,000 abortions a year; gun control laws; global warming legislation; and numerous other poorly thought out ideas. Liberals crave the feeling of self-righteous compassion they get when they advocate for these issues. All it takes is a peek beneath the surface to find the errors.

In summary:

The claim being made is that if Jovan Belcher didn’t have a gun, he and his girlfriend would still be alive. That is optimistic speculation, at best. Those who want to kill themselves, want to kill others, and want to commit crimes will always find a way to do what they feel is necessary. Those without guns will use knives, or explosives, or poison, or their own hands to commit acts of violence. Guns are not the problem, people are. Eliminating guns with intent to stop violence is like giving cough medicine to someone with the plague.

Liberals love to bleed over issues without actually thinking about them in detail. With the tug of a thread, you can unravel the Liberal argument.
