11-Year-Old Given 5-Day Suspension for Bringing Foam “Bullet” to School

The school initially expelled the 11-year-old, a special needs student in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but relented and gave him a 5-day suspension instead after he brought a foam Nerf bullet to school with a toothpick added to the tip. By his account, the toothpick made it so that when he shot it at the ground at home, it would stick in the dirt. He had it in his pocket one day at school, because he had forgotten about it. School officials thought that it resembled a shank too much and assumed Read more […]

6th Grader Suspended for a Year for Bringing Maple Leaf to School

It may have been a Japanese maple leaf, or something similar. So why would a sixth grader be suspended for a year for simply bringing a piece of foliage with him to school? Because that leaf happened to resemble (somewhat) a cannabis leaf, and the school has a very strict “anti-fake-controlled-substance” policy. Apparently, the kid was pretending that it was pot, and when the assistant principal found out about it, he was promptly suspended. It’s actually a little more complicated than that. Read more […]

Another Little Kid Suspended for Illegal Possession of Assault Toy

It wasn’t even entirely the little kid’s fault. He had left his backpack in a friend’s car, so his mom had to pack his stuff in another bag. What he and his mom didn’t realize was that the backup bag had a toy gun in it, something he didn’t realize until it was too late. Instead of waiting to be found out by a teacher, first-grader Darin Simak did what he thought was the right thing to do. He “turned himself in.” He took it to his teacher and told her he wasn’t supposed to have Read more […]

High Schooler Given 12-Month Expulsion for Forgetting About Pocketknife in Her Locker

I remember being at the airport about 11 years ago and forgetting that I had a pocketknife on me. I always had it on me, and I remembered that I had it as I was going through security. Instead of waiting for the security personnel to find it, I decided I would tell them as soon as I could, so that they wouldn’t think I was trying to sneak it in. I pulled it out of my jacket where I always kept it and gave it to one of the guards. He gasped as if I were holding an explosive device. With eyes Read more […]

Common Sense-Free Zone: Student Suspended for 10 Days for Possession of Yellow Toy Squirt Gun

It’s happened yet again, and the school superintendent isn’t making any apologies. He’s just following school policy, which says that no weapons, real or toy, are allowed. In this case, a yellow squirt gun fell out of a student’s backpack, which led to the student’s getting a 10-day suspension. The Sun Journal reported: A 10th-grader was suspended from Lewiston High School [Lewiston, Maine] this week after allegedly bringing a bright yellow squirt gun to school. A source said the teen Read more […]

Student Faced 10-Day Suspension and Expulsion for Taking Razor Away from “Cutter”

We’ve definitely seen this sort of thing before. Students being punished for doing the right thing. Last year, Mark Horne wrote about an incident in Florida where a 15-year-old student on a school bus was able to wrestle a .22 revolver away from a student who appeared as if he was about to shoot another student. Horne wrote that even though the police confirmed to the media that the handgun was loaded, the school still suspended the boy for three days for being “involved in an incident” that Read more […]

Jordan Wiser is an 18-year-old student at Ashtabula County Technical and Career Campus in Ohio. His particular focus of study was public safety. The Ashtabula County Technical and Career Campus (A-Tech) website summarizes their Public Read more […]

Boy Suspended For Having Fishing Knife In His Dad’s Car

Officials say that schools’ zero tolerance policies are needed to prevent school shootings and incidents involving other types of weapons. But there are always holes in these policies. Those holes are where the kids are going to go to commit whatever kind of attack they want. Sometimes they get caught, and other times they don’t. These zero tolerance policies are of the same mindset as gun control and the idea of a police state, where the 4th Amendment is invalid and “security” checkpoints Read more […]
