Poll: Most Americans Think the Terrorists are Winning

If terrorism is about invoking terror in the hearts of those whom it targets, I’d say the terrorists are winning by a large margin. Part of their purpose is to kill. But more than that, they want to make their intended targets live in fear. They murder people in the most horrific ways so that an entire country such our own cowers in fear before them. A recent poll found that more Americans think that the terrorists are winning the “war on terror” than those who think we’re winning, and Read more […]

Suspect Charged in “Anti-Muslim” Hate Crime Named Mohamed

This is a little inconvenient. It was supposed to be an angry white man, not a black man with a Muslim name who shot a Muslim cabdriver. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) took the case to the Justice Department and urged them to investigate the incident as a hate crime. Predictably, CAIR blamed it on Islamophobia. But the 26-year-old suspect is black and has a Muslim name himself. John Nolte with Breitbart wrote: The day after Thanksgiving, in the wake of a terrible shooting that Read more […]

Planes, Guns, and Automobiles: Perceived Safety and Irrational Fears

My brother-in-law has never flown in an airplane. He’s terrified of the idea. But he’s a big fan of driving. It’s basically useless to tell him the statistical reality that flying is probably safer than driving: In absolute numbers, driving is more dangerous, with more than 5 million accidents compared to 20 accidents in flying. A more direct comparison per 100 million miles pits driving’s 1.27 fatalities and 80 injuries against flying’s lack of deaths and almost no injuries, which again shows Read more […]

Domestic Racial Tension and Radical Islam Could Create a Perfect Storm in America

A recent article in the basically useless Daily Mail reported that 66 “ISIS operatives” have been arrested within American borders on suspicion of terrorist activities. The Drudge Report was of course quick to mention that some purported Syrian refugees had been arrested. Thanks, Drudge. But the real surprise here is that most of those arrested, if the Daily Mail can be believed, were actually American citizens, some of them former US military men. Among the suspected terrorists were quite a Read more […]

Pundits Quick to Blame Snowden for Paris Attacks

If the aftermath of 9/11 taught us anything, it is that centralized governments slouching toward totalitarianism never let a crisis go to waste. And, in a corollary, citizens are far more credulous and trusting when they have just experienced a trauma. So, in the wake of the Paris attacks, it doesn’t surprise me at all that the intelligence community is calling for ever more lenient restrictions on their data collection and powers. And people are giving it to them. In fact, the intelligence Read more […]

On ISIS and the Syrian Refugee Crisis: Peace Takes Courage, So We Will Have War

A day after ISIS operatives killed over a hundred people in Paris, the French military dropped some bombs on Raqqa, Syria—the de facto capital of the Islamic State. The attack was mostly symbolic, as probably no ISIS agents were killed. But it signaled how the West would be dealing with ISIS. Unfortunately, it also signaled how the West would deal with the Middle East at large. Twenty-seven of 50 US state governors have signed executive orders refusing the relocation of Syrian refugees into Read more […]
