Should We Just Delete History that Offends Us?

In light of our “politically correct” need to expunge away anything that offends us, I thought this harrowing excerpt from George Orwell’s 1984 might be apropos: Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always Read more […]

Huxley vs. Orwell: Whose Dystopian Prophecy was Closer to the Truth?

In 1949, George Orwell’s publishers sent his old French teacher, Aldous Huxley, a copy of Orwell’s new book, Nineteen Eighty-Four. Then Huxley sent Orwell a letter, both congratulating him for his fine work and gently criticizing his vision of the future: Within the next generation I believe that the world’s rulers will discover that infant conditioning and narco-hypnosis are more efficient, as instruments of government, than clubs and prisons, and that the lust for power can be just as completely Read more […]

Our Slow Walk Into An Orwellian Future

“This is an update from your federal government…” The words screeched from the rusted speaker, which, because of a lack of funding—or so they told us—was unable to be replaced. Those words never failed to turn my blood to lead, stopping me in my tracks, no matter what I was doing at the moment. The anonymous government sanctioned speaker continued. “Beginning at the end of the month, a new law will come into effect. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration will be scouring Read more […]

UC Berkeley SG Bans the Term “Illegal Immigrant”

According to The College Fix: “The UC Berkeley student government has banned the term ‘illegal immigrant’ from its discourse, deeming the phrase racist, offensive, unfair and derogatory.” Once again, we have fallen down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. The student government at UC Berkeley has decided that the term “illegal” is demeaning, and should be banned. I’m not quite sure what banning a word does, other than serve to prove a point. They cannot stop people from uttering the word, nor can Read more […]

Weapons Ban Makes No Sense Because Power Hates Submitting to Logic

Economist, Megan McArdle has written a valuable and yet problematic piece for the Daily Beast, “Just Say No to Dumb Gun Laws.” Since I think all gun laws are dumb, or at least illegal and thus damaging to the social order of the United States, I could technically agree with her title. But I’d be happier if she had simplified it by replacing the word, “Dumb” with the word, “All.” But the real problem on display in McArdle’s brief essay is her assumption that anyone cares whether Read more […]
