Roman emperor Nero was accused of sitting around playing his fiddle or violin as Rome burned to the ground. Barack Obama is being accused of playing golf and taking far too many vacations while America and the world are crumbling to destruction. Even though the two sound eerily similar, there is one glaring difference: Nero never told everyone that he would stop playing his fiddle.
In 2008, the Sen. Barack Obama was discussing his book, ‘The Audacity of Hope’ in front of a live audience when he spoke about what the commitment of anyone holding the office of President of the United States should be. He told the host:
Obama: “The bargain that any president strikes with is, you give me this office and in turn my fears, doubts, insecurities, foibles, need for sleep, family life, vacations, leisure, is gone. I am giving myself to you. And the American people should have no patience for what’s going on in your head because you’ve got a job to do.”
“And so, how I think about it is, you don’t make that decision unless you are prepared to make that sacrifice, that trade off, that bargain. And I think what’s difficult and important for somebody like myself who has some, a wonderful forbearing life and two gorgeous young children is that they end up having to make some of those sacrifices with me. That’s a profound decision that you don’t make lightly. I think those who make mistakes, I suspect in the President’s office, make it because they haven’t fully thought through the dimensions of that choice.”
Host: “Can you imagine yourself at some point making that kind of commitment?”
Oh where do I begin? Before I point out the obvious hypocrisy of Obama, let me just say that his kids have made no such sacrifice. They are attending one of the best and most secure private schools in the world and we are paying for it. They have vacationed all over the country and the world, even going on spring break in Mexico and Colorado at our expense.
As for Obama, what about his statement about vacations and leisure? He has taken more vacations and spent more time on the golf course than any president in history. Yeah I hear the arguments that he travels with a ton of personnel that keep him apprised of everything going on, but it still goes against what he said should be the commitment of anyone who takes the job.
Remember when he said that other presidents made mistakes because they didn’t have that commitment? He’s right. Obama has taken more vacations and leisure time than any other president and has made more mistakes than any other president. That was the only part of his 2008 statement that he lived up to.
A GOP spokesperson commented about Obama’s lack of concern for what’s happening, saying:
“Our country’s foreign policy is in shambles. We are facing so many security crises, yet President Obama’s instinct is to head to Martha’s Vineyard to fundraise for Democrats.”
Dana Milbank, a Washington Post political reporter criticized Obama, saying that his vacation:
“Could fit under the heading of tone deafness.”
“Even presidents need down time, and Obama can handle his commander-in-chief duties wherever he is. But his decision to proceed with his getaway just 36 hours after announcing the [U.S.] military action in Iraq risks fueling the impression that he is detached as the world burns.”
“It’s understandable that Obama would want to get away from it all, but for a president struggling to build support for his foreign policy, vacationing during a crisis is no day at the beach. Obama vacations as the world burns.”
“Criticism from Clinton. War with the Islamic State. Trouble with Maliki. It’s enough to make a man hook his drive into the sand trap.”
Further evidence of Obama’s hypocrisy could be seen as photos of him playing golf with former NBA star Ray Allan and former NFL player Ahmad Rashad. Remember Obama’s recent trip to Texas to help raise campaign donations for Democrats? Gov. Rick Perry insisted that Obama come to the border to see for himself the crisis we are facing with illegals and Obama responded that he’s not into photo ops.
Just like what’s happening with ISIS, the economy, jobs and immigration Obama can’t be bothered with real crises but he does have time to attend fund raisers and have photo ops taken on the golf course. In this aspect, Obama is just like Nero!
