Republican Neel Kashkari is by no means a perfect candidate. He was one of the architects of the Bush-Obama Stimulus programs, he supports legalizing gay marriage, and he wants to “fix” Obamacare, not end it. These three issues alone would make him unappealing as a national Republican candidate… but he’s not a national candidate. He’s a candidate for Governor of California and he’s facing one of the least thoughtful and most beholden to cronyism politicians in the nation, Governor Jerry Brown (D-CA). So we are definitely cheering on Mr. Kashkari.
On Thursday night Kashkari did battle with Governor Brown on the debate stage and most observers called the challenger the clear victor. It was the only debate the two men will hold and for the Republican it will have to be enough. He is the underdog in a very blue state – but things are bad enough in California that voters may be willing to vote for a moderate Republican if it means finding work sooner rather than later.
I happen to think Neel Kashkari walloped his opponent, but i’ll let you be the judge of that. Be sure not to miss the most memorable line which comes when discussing soaring energy prices, “He’s raising your gas prices to fund his vanity project, the high-speed train. What I call the crazy train.”
