Yes, at one time, America was ‘One Nation Under God’, but sadly that idea is rapidly fading away. Believe it or not, the fastest growing religion in the United States is being referred to as Nones – people having no religious affiliation at all.
According to a recent study conducted by Pew Research, nearly one out of every 5 people America identify themselves as having no religious affiliation. In 2007, 15.3% said they had no religious affiliation. Five years later, that number has climbed to 19.6%.
Nones or those with no religious affiliation are composed of:
- Atheists (2007 – 1.6%; 2012 – 2.4%)
- Agnostics (2007 – 2.1%; 2012 – 3.3%)
- Nothing in particular (2007 – 11.6%; 2012 – 13.9%)
The only other category that saw an increase in numbers was ‘Other Faith’ which would include Muslim, Judaism, Buddhism, Shinto, etc. In 2007 the figure was 4% and in 2012 it rose to 6%. According to another source, the largest increases in ‘Other Faith’ are Islam and Mormonism.
In 2000, just prior to the 9-11 attacks, there were approximately 1 million Muslims in the U.S. In 2010, that number had more than doubled, climbing up to 2.6 million. A large percentage of that increase was seen in the number of Muslims that are immigrants from other countries.
In 2000, there were approximately 2 million Mormons in the U.S. That number has tripled to 6.1 million in 2010. Unlike the Muslims, the increase in Mormons is largely due to an aggressive missionary program within the U.S. and the fact that many Mormons have large families.
Americans identifying themselves as Christian (Pew’s categories) went from 78% in 2007 down to 73% in 2012. While most categories within the Christian main category remained relatively unchanged in the past five years, several Protestant categories saw a marked decrease in:
- White mainline Protestants fell from 18% in 2007 to 15% in 2012
- White evangelical Protestants fell from 21% in 2007 to 19% in 2012.
Pew Research also showed the results from another source that displayed the long-term trends in religious affiliation from 1972 to 2010. Their results showed:
- Protestants – 1972 – 63%; 2010 – 51%
- Catholics – 1972 – 26%; 2010 – 25%
- Nones – 1972 – 7%; 2010 – 18%
The decline in religious affiliation, especially among Protestants, can be seen in our culture. Sexual promiscuity is not only accepted but often encouraged. Planned Parenthood receives taxpayer funds which allows them to teach our children sex is okay and you don’t need to tell mom or dad or worry about religion. Adultery, prostitution, gay sex, pornography and more are portrayed on television and in the theaters.
Our government is beginning to approve and legalize same-sex marriage and go so far as to extend special rights and privileges to homosexuals. Our government is actively attacking the sanctity of traditional marriage and the structure of the family. Obama’s government is forcing Christians to provide contraception and abortion coverage against their religious beliefs. The Pentagon has threatened military chaplains to stop preaching sin, especially when it comes to homosexuality or they may face charges of sedition and face a court martial hearing. Our government is systematically removing all of our religious rights and freedoms, that is if you are a Christian or a Jew, and giving them to Muslims and Nones.
Our public schools are effectively squelching Christian students from expressing their beliefs because it is labeled bullying. Yet others, including teachers are allowed to do the same to Christians and it’s not defined as bullying. Christian students aren’t allowed to have a Baccalaureate service for graduating seniors, but Muslim girls are allowed to have a girls only prom because of their faith.
You cannot practice your Christian faith in government, in public school or in business. In some places, you can’t even practice your Christian faith on public sidewalks or even in your own home. Is it any wonder that the polls show the decline of Christians and an increase of Nones? Unless America repents and turns from our sinful ways, we will perish under the wrath of a holy and righteous God. And folks, that scares me more than anything else in this world, because no matter how faithful I am to Jesus Christ, when God brings His wrath down on our nation, EVERYONE will suffer. Look at the example of Daniel in the Old Testament. If that scares you as much as it scares me, then please get off your keester and starting doing something to help turn this nation around.
