Moral superiority is an interesting thing. We have all experienced times when we know we are standing on the moral high-ground; be it in a simple argument, a political debate; or even a religious debate–if you have had many of those. It’s in these times that you know you’ve won the argument; because from where you’re standing, you can see the entire playing field. At that moment, you know that you’re opponent has no ground left on which to stand. Understanding a position of moral superiority is certainly viable in particular instances.
The average Liberal takes the cake in regard to moral superiority. They believe that they always have the moral high-ground on every issue, all the time. With this belief, they are often willing to use a false moral superiority to shove their opinions down our throats. Piers Morgan is a great example of this.
On the issues of gun control, and illegal immigration, Liberals love to grandstand; claiming absolute authority. They trot out victims, and read sob stories in an effort to sway us. They act as if the entire country is on their side in their desire to unnecessarily and ineffectively regulate guns, and allow people to illegally enter the country at will. However, when you take a mirror to society, that belief shatters.
A new poll and a letter from a Columbine victim tell an interesting story. According to a Reuters/Ipsos survey, 53% of Americans would prefer that illegal immigrants be deported. Reuters explains: “These results are in line with other polls in recent years, suggesting that people’s views on immigration have not changed dramatically since the immigration debate reignited in Congress last month, according to Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.”
If you listened to the Left, you might think that 110% of Americans are just itching to open up our borders to everyone; never punishing those who blatantly broke the law to get here. The Reuters survey dispels that idea.
The Left tries to sway us with sob stories; attempting to tug on our heartstrings. What they don’t talk about is all of the immigrants who have waited years in line–legally–to enter the country. They never mention how unfair it is that illegal residents somehow get priority. They will never talk about illegal immigrants in a negative light; always calling them “undocumented residents.” They stack the story in favor of one side. This is typical of the Left.
Democrats stack the pieces in such a way as to benefit them the most in regard to elections and public opinion. They want a sympathetic Hispanic vote, as well as the potential votes of millions of illegal residents. It’s sad and simple, all at once.
Even more egregious is the Left’s use of shooting victims to claim the moral high-ground. Every time someone comes out against gun control, Liberals invoke the victims of shootings in order to push that advocate into the ground. It is a form of moral bullying. Once again, Piers Morgan is a specialist at this. However, this backfires too, when you simply listen.
Recently, Evan Todd, a victim of the Columbine shooting wrote a letter to the Obama administration, standing against Obama’s gun control positions. Referencing the assault weapons ban he said this: “The assault weapons ban did not deter these two murderers, nor did the other thirty-something laws that they broke.” The entirety of the letter can be read at The Blaze.
The Left tries to use victims to steal the moral high-ground away from those who actually hold it. They often attempt to stifle reports that run contrary to their agenda; like that of Evan Todd.
Benjamin Disraeli said: “Courage is fire, and bullying is smoke.” I would argue that falsely taking the moral high-ground is even less than smoke.
