There are two prevailing views of human nature. In one view, humans are naturally bad. In the other, humans are naturally good. This may be a simplification, but it is accurate in the aggregate.
In broad terms, leftists tend to believe that humans are naturally good—or at least naturally perfectible. And that is why they emphasize things like the war on poverty, socialized education, and socialized medicine. They believe that the old Platonic lie is actually true—vice is a consequence of poverty and ignorance. Deal with poverty and ignorance, and you will perfect human nature.
Not so much, it turns out. You might change the nature of the crimes, but you certainly won’t change human nature. Even trying to change human nature belies your ideological foundations. How can you believe humans are intrinsically good and in need of perfecting at the same time? The human nature question has already been settled long ago for anyone who cares to stumble out of the proverbial cave of shadows.
Because the fact is that human nature is most empirically, verifiably, incontrovertibly, bad. The most recent illustration proving that leftists just can’t stand this fact is the recent debacle over at the University of Iowa. Apparently, the president had the nerve to say that she did not have a great hope of ending all rapes on campus. In her own words:
. . . The goal would be to end that, to never have another sexual assault. That’s probably not a realistic goal just given human nature, and that’s unfortunate. . . .
I mean, yeah. Of course you should never promise people you can end all rape or murder or violence or vice. That’s just plain ignorant hubris, right? Not according to leftists. They were just outraged at the president’s reasonable remarks, and they forced her to apologize. I guess that’s not too surprising considering the high marks leftists get in the realm of ignorant hubris, but still…
This whole situation is absurd. People were actually protesting the president’s remarks. They had signs with things like, “Not in my nature, Sally” and “This university protects rapists and not victims.”
Rubbish. Would you rather your dear president lie to you? Is that what you want? Is that really protecting the victims? I don’t think so. I say Sally needs to take it a step further. Recognize that rapists are giving in to the most base elements of real human nature, and set more strict and more severe punishments to deter their behavior. What would the leftists recommend instead? Rehabilitation seminars? Having the victims pay taxes to support the lives of the rapists that victimized them? Seriously?
Leftists need to cut it out. The more their attempts to perfect humanity fail, the harder they try. And the harder they fall. Let’s just call a spade a spade already.
