Martha Beck said: “My point is that perceptual bias can affect nut jobs and scientists alike. If we hold too rigidly to what we think we know, we ignore or avoid evidence of anything that might change our mind.” Bias is something we deal with every day. All human beings—as a product of the accumulation of choices and events throughout their lives—have biases. The problem is not that we, as people, are biased; the problem is not that those who cover the news have personal biases; the problem is that journalists allow their bias to inform them. By definition, journalists are supposed to set bias aside in pursuit of the truth.
I speculated several days ago that the media blackout of the Kermit Gosnell infanticide trial was a product of the Left’s agenda. Now, it seems, that I was correct.
According to The Washington Post, Marc Lamont Hill, of HuffPo, said this regarding the lack of coverage:
“For what it’s worth, I do think that those of us on the left have made a decision not to cover this trial because we worry that it’ll compromise abortion rights. Whether you agree with abortion or not, I do think there’s a direct connection between the media’s failure to cover this and our own political commitments on the left. I think it’s a bad idea, I think it’s dangerous, but I think that’s the way it is.”
An admission of an agenda altering news coverage coming from someone like Hill is staggering, and extraordinarily rare. If his view is correct—and it is—what does that mean?
The majority of journalists in the mainstream media hold views that are very liberal. That’s a well-worn topic. If journalists pick stories based on how those stories will affect their own beliefs, they are not journalists at all; they are opinion columnists. If journalists are restrained by their “political commitments on the Left,” what good are they to anyone? Finally, if journalists fear that covering one of the most horrific murder stories of the last decade might harm their own agenda, they might want to take a step back, and look at their beliefs.
As I mentioned several days ago, the Leftist media cannot allow the Gosnell trial to be talked about because it would break the already tenuous grasp they have on the issue of abortion. They hold a conviction that—aside from “geography,” and legal jargon—Is tantamount to supporting full-scale homicide. The slayings performed by Dr. Gosnell are equal to any mid to late-term abortion being legally performed in facilities around the country.
If the American people were to make the connection that what the Left holds dear, and what Kermit Gosnell is being prosecuted for are nearly, if not entirely identical; the Liberal media believes that their entire agenda would crumble. They are correct. They are terrified that abortion rights are in harm’s way; that a woman’s right to selectively slay her own child will be jeopardized if they reported on the horrors of the Gosnell trial.
For this to be admitted to by someone on the Left is incredible, and rare. So, we have drawn back the curtain and seen the weak man standing behind it. What does that mean? It means that journalism is dead; because as long as those covering the news hold their political commitments higher than their commitment to the truth, everything we read and watch is opinion. And you know what they say about opinions.
