Gun-Free Zone DC Doesn’t Stop Teen from Trying to Rob Resident at Gunpoint

This was apparently one of several cases in gun-free zone DC involving shootings that day. In this particular case, a teen armed with a sawed-off shotgun approached another man and told him he was being robbed. But the victim didn’t comply, and he fought with the kid, eventually shooting him in the back with the teen’s own gun. The Blaze reported:

The 18-year-old walked up to his target, carrying a sawed-off shotgun and announcing that he was going to rob a 22-year-old man, police said.

Seconds later, the would-be robber had been fatally wounded — with his own weapon.

Police said 18-year-old Channel Johnson told his intended victim that he was robbing him on Wednesday morning in the southeastern District of Columbia, WTTG-TV reported.

The 22-year-old, however, was not an easy target.

He and Johnson struggled, police said, and Johnson wound up shot in the back, struck by the blast of his own shotgun.

He was hospitalized and later died of his injuries.

Police are not expected to press charges against the man involved in the altercation.

Johnson’s shooting was one of many in the nation’s capital that day; watch below for more information on the string of shootings that took place Wednesday.

This could have ended very badly, since D.C. doesn’t allow anyone to pack for self-defense purposes. Only police, high-profile politicians’ security guards and criminals are allowed to carry a gun in D.C. I’m glad it worked out for the 22-year-old. But I wouldn’t be surprised to find people protesting the death of Channel Johnson and claiming that it was another racially-motivated killing.
