Gun Control Group: A Bad Guy With a Gun has Never Been Stopped by a Good Guy With a Gun

Not long after the Sandy Hook shooting, NRA head Wayne LaPierre noted that the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Not surprisingly, the head of the gun control group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense Shannon Watts thinks there’s no such thing as a “good guy with a gun.” So, no armed criminal has ever been stopped by a law-abiding gun owner.

CNN paired her up with an Open Carry Texas member in a recent interview. Host Victor Blackwell asked her the following:

“I want to challenge you on something Shannon. Wayne LaPierre, executive director of the NRA, after Sandy Hook, said the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. And I think, essentially [what guns rights proponents are saying] is [they] want their wives to be able to carry–to be the good person with the gun. Is there an example in school shootings or a mall shooting or these public facilities, where that has been wrong? Where a bad guy with a gun has been stopped in any other way or by a person other than a law enforcement officer with a gun or by killing himself?”

Watts responded, “This has never happened. Data shows it doesn’t happen.”

Gun-grabbers always love to point out how no gun carrier has ever prevented a mass shooting. It’s a trick statement. You couldn’t ever prove that a mass shooting would have occurred had someone not prevented it. We don’t have the benefit of peering into an alternate universe to see how things may have happened under different circumstances.

There are many cases however where a mass shooting very well could have occurred, given what guns and ammo the murderer had on him at the time he was taken out.

One that comes to mind is the Oregon mall shooter. He came in with 145 rounds of ammo. He killed a few people, and he could have kept going, but he was confronted by a shopper with a concealed weapon. When the murderer saw this other armed shopper and his gun pointed right at him, the mall shooter retreated and shot and killed himself.

A more recent case happened in my neck of the woods. A guy came to the county courthouse armed with a rifle, homemade explosives and other supplies suggesting he was planning on staying a while and holding people hostage. He shot and wounded a police officer and tried to run over a cop, but because he was outnumbered and outgunned, he died at the scene. That was a situation that could have ended very badly, but because there were good guys with guns, the bad guy with a gun was taken out and everybody inside the courthouse was safe.

AWR Hawkins listed a few others:

In February 2013 an armed guard in Atlanta subdued and disarmed a shooter at an Atlanta middle school.

On December 16 Breitbart News reported the Arapahoe High School shooting only last 80 seconds because the school’s armed resource officer closed in on the shooter, who subsequently killed himself.

On June 6 Breitbart News reported on how a good guy with a gun stopped a bad guy with a guy who was attacking a courthouse in Georgia.

On November 7 Breitbart News reported guns are used defensively an estimated 2,082 times a day in America. That’s over 2,000 times a day a good guy with a gun acts to stop a bad guy armed with a weapon of some sort.

The only reason these aren’t as popular as Sandy Hook or the Aurora Theater is that the media won’t report on them. The cases where mass shootings are prevented are not nearly as sensational as a massacre committed by some crazy, prescription drug-addicted white guy with an “assault” rifle and a “high-capacity” magazine.
