Government Pays People to Lay on Beach and Think of Food on Mars

Our nation is on the verge of a financial collapse.  Obama and his liberal cronies have one remedy in mind and this is raising taxes.  Obamacare alone contains over a dozen new taxes that will hit every American, even though Obama keeps saying that he will not raise taxes on middle income America.

Republicans are demanding that the solution entails massive spending cuts, which only makes sense.  Any business in the world always starts with spending budget cuts when facing financial difficulties.  Obama’s response to the Republicans is to give him tax increases now and they’ll get spending cuts later.  The problem is, that’s what they said the last time we faced this same situation and they never got back to the spending cuts.  In fact, they increased spending.

As a tax payer, I am incensed by this callous attitude, especially when I see reports of frivolous and ridiculous government spending.  Case in point was made by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) who revealed a government grant that paid people up to $5,000 to go to Hawaii and think about what food they would eat on Mars.

Another example is new government boondoggle created by the Obama administration.  In 2009, the Democratic controlled House and Senate passed the Travel Protection Act of 2009 to help promote travel to the US, as if that’s really a problem.  In May of 2011, Brand USA was created as a government backed public-private partnership travel agency.

Since the launch of Brand USA, some of their expenditures include:

  • $1 million for party to launch Brand USA in London.
  • $1 million in severance pay to eight employees who were terminated.
  • $50,252 for giveaways at the International Pow Wow trade show.
  • $35,000 for Chinese made plastic water bottles for IPW trade show.
  • $4,139 for 250 holiday cards.
  • $3,592 for holiday e-cards.
  • $2,449 for ringtone version of ‘Land of Dreams’ by Rosanne Cash.
  • $2,700 for 26 sets of business cards.

And let’s not forget the 4-5 vacations a year the Obama’s take with each one costing taxpayers $400,000 and more.  When was the last time you took a traveling vacation with your family?  My last one was in 2002 and it was just my wife and I.  Before that, it was 1991 and I can’t recall one before then, and we’ve been married for over 41 years.

If every government department and agency trimmed their spending to only necessary expenditures, I bet it would be enough to not only cut the budget but start to reduce the federal deficit as well.  And the first department I would start with is the Executive Department.  I would limit one vacation a year and no other family or friends to travel on our dollar.  I would also question taxpayer support of Michelle Obama’s mother who has living the life of luxury in the White House ever since the rest of them moved in.
