Former Marine Standing Guard at School

In the wake of the shootings last week at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, one father decided it was time for him to take action.

Jordan Pritchard, who served as a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps, drug out his uniform, cleaned it off, put it on and then went and stood guard outside Gower Elementary School in Nashville, Tennessee.

I commend Pritchard for taking action and standing guard, but I believe that he should have been armed.  Anyone like Adam Lanza who has the intent to kill at a school would only shoot an unarmed Marine or anyone else that stands in the way.  If Pritchard and others like him were given permission to carry a weapon and then stand guard outside a school, that would go a lot further in protecting the school from would be killers.

Gun laws are not going to stop the problem.  Arming the community, school administrators and teachers will go a long way to preventing such a tragedy happening at their school.  Just like in war between countries, it’s being armed and ready that usually prevents war from breaking out.  Back in the Cold War era, the only thing that kept us from being attacked by the Soviet Union was that we had a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons aimed at them.

Instead of trying to ban guns, Congress should consider the words of one of our Founding Fathers and author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson who wrote to Jacob Brown in 1808 saying:

“I learn with great concern that [one] portion of our frontier so interesting, so important, and so exposed, should be so entirely unprovided with common fire-arms. I did not suppose any part of the United States so destitute of what is considered as among the first necessaries of a farm-house.”

In 1824, Jefferson wrote to John Cartwright saying:

“The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that… it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.”

Notice that Jefferson said that it is not only a right to be armed but the duty to be armed at all times.  He also didn’t say it was the militia, but the people had that duty to be armed.

I for one believe we need to follow the words of Jefferson and arm the people of America.  Not only will it help defend them from burglars, intruders, rapist and would be mass murderers, but it would also make it near impossible for any foreign nation to invade and take over the country.
