It does not surprise me at all that governments want to control the press and be able to censor stories. I expect all governments to desire to be able to do this. But it completely shocks me that the so-called “Western democracies” are being told outright to give the press over to the government. According to the Telegraph:
“The ‘high level’ recommendations that will be used to draft future EU legislation also attack David Cameron for failing to automatically implement proposals by the Lord Justice Leveson inquiry for a state regulation of British press. A “high level” EU panel, that includes Latvia’s former president and a former German justice minister, was ordered by Neelie Kroes, European Commission vice-president, last year to report on ‘media freedom and pluralism.’ It has concluded that it is time to introduce new rules to rein in the press. ‘All EU countries should have independent media councils,’ the report concluded. ‘Media councils should have real enforcement powers, such as the imposition of fines, orders for printed or broadcast apologies, or removal of journalistic status.’ As well as setting up state regulators with draconian powers, the panel also recommended that the European Commission be placed in overall control in order to ensure that the new watchdogs do not breach EU laws.”
So this is it. Not only do they try to control the press, but they do so openly. They expect the nations to basically hand the press over to bureaucracies that are nominally “independent” but serve the EU’s needs. They want these buracracies to have the power to fire journalists from their jobs (“removal of journalistic status”).
“’The national media councils should follow a set of European-wide standards and be monitored by the Commission to ensure that they comply with European values,’ the report said. The EU report praises Lord Justice Leveson’s controversial proposals and attacks politicians, including the Prime Minister, that have questioned state regulation of newspapers… ‘That judge Leveson’s recommendations should have been rejected out of hand by some politicians in high office is not very reassuring.’”
What is “not very reassuring” is that there are Europeans who expect everyone to meekly submit to this kind of insane control of all news. The agenda is obvious. The EU is hoping to get massive control over all expression of views and transmission of news so that they can then complete their control of what Europeans think and set all limits of discourse. As the document states,
“The democratic legitimacy of the European Union is closely dependent on the emergence of a public sphere which is informed about European issues and able to engage in debates about them. This requires, in turn, adequate media coverage of European issues and politics.”
That’s “adequate media coverage” in which political bureaucrats have the power to fire people who work in media, and in which all school students are brainwashed: “Media literacy should be taught in schools starting at high-school level.”
Worse, we consider this enslaving corporate-bank-army combine to be our ally. We are joined to it through NATO. We actually consider it part of “the free world.” We also know that progressives openly call for us to be “more like Europe” in various ways. Treaties are suggested to bring our laws into conformity with their laws (such as in the case of gun ownership). So how long before we see politicians openly demanding the same authority for the Federal Government?
In my opinion, this shameless attempt to gain power and violate fundamental human rights is an incredible news story, yet I’ve heard nothing about it on radio news. That, too, makes me fear that our elites want us to go in the same direction.
