It isn’t just the IRS. Now the EPA has been caught treating Liberal and Conservative environmental groups differently, to the cost of as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars to those conservative groups.
“Research by the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a conservative Washington, D.C., think tank, claims that the political bias is routine when it comes to deciding which groups are charged fees. Christopher Horner, senior fellow at CEI, said liberal groups have their fees for documents waived about 90 percent of the time, in contrast with conservative groups that it claims are denied fee waivers about 90 percent of the time.”
Congress is now investigating.
“‘I don’t think it is fair at all. It is not fair to the American taxpayer – the American taxpayer should expect and demand that the EPA treats everyone equally in regard to these requests,’ said Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Tim Murphy, a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee. ‘This cannot be tolerated. As we see more federal agencies with this kind of bias, it is and should be a concern for all of us.’”
No! American taxpayers are stupid if they demand equal treatment from the EPA and if they think they will ever be able to demand reform.
The whole point of the EPA is to be a law unto itself. Rather than allowing the public to hold people liable in court, the EPA has become the ultimate arbiter in most cases. It is just as capable of protecting polluters as stopping them. After all, if a company can claim to comply with the EPA’s edicts, how can victims take them to court? The whole premise of the EPA is that we needed an “agency” with huge independent power to make people behave. Pretending that we can keep such an agency and, at the same time, force it to behave, is a refusal to deal with reality.
Taxpayers need to demand that the Environmental Protection Agency be dismantled and destroyed, not reformed. You can’t equip an agency with ultimate power and then act surprise that the people in charge aren’t morally perfect. As James Madison wrote in The Federalist Papers:
“If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions.”
The purpose of the EPA was to escape all of these precautions. It was founded on the premise that the world is such a dangerous place that normal use of the courts and normal use of written laws was insufficient. We needed a dictatorial agency.
So we got on. Now, get rid of it. Don’t pretend you can control it.
