While this could have ended badly for the Detroit man, and could have been used by the gun control crowd to push for more restrictions that make it increasingly difficult to purchase and keep firearms, it ended badly for the armed crook. Twenty-four-year-old Joe Lanier, who works as an exterminator, was sitting in his car when a 17-year-old approached him and demanded his sunglasses at gunpoint. That’s when Lanier grabbed his own gun and shot him several times. The kid robber now lies in critical condition in the hospital. All over a pair of sunglasses.
Being residents of Detroit, the Lanier family knows how dangerous the city is. I imagine they’re not big gun control fans. The mother Angela carries and is a firearm instructor herself who taught all her sons how handle and use guns. Local Detroit ABC News affiliate WXYZ reported:
Police say a 17-year-old remains in the hospital in critical condition after the young father he tried robbing shot him several times.
It happened late Wednesday afternoon near the corner of Warren and Grayton on the city’s east side.
Angela Lanier tells 7 Action News her 24-year-old son Joe fired his gun when the teenager tried robbing him while he was sitting in his car. She says he was on the job as an exterminator when the teenager pulled a gun on him for his sunglasses.
Joe Lanier says, “The boy tried to rob me, and I shot him. That’s what happened.”
He also went on to say, “That’s why he’s in the hospital and not me.”
Lanier has a concealed carry license and his mother is an instructor herself, who says she’s taught all of her sons how to responsibly operate a gun.
Her son fired his gun seven times. The windows of his car were blown out.
Police are still investigating.
The mother didn’t harp on the fact that the 17-year-old had access to a gun. She’s not naïve. She knows that that’s the way it is. It’s not the gun’s fault. It’s the kid’s fault, and his parents bear a lot of the responsibility as well. The mother encouraged all law-abiding citizens to carry concealed and to learn how to use firearms responsibly, especially if they live in a dangerous city like Detroit. Trying to take away guns from everyone will never solve the problem of violent crime. It will only exacerbate it.
