ACLU To The Unnecessary Rescue!

The American Civil Liberties Union: the bastion of substantive, relevant, and never ridiculous lawsuits. Founded on the principles of freedom and equality, the ACLU defends the rights of the disenfranchised from those who would persecute them. Well, prepare yourselves for what you are about to hear coming out of Raleigh, North Carolina.

According to

“A federal judge has ruled it is unconstitutional for North Carolina to issue pro-life license plates unless the state offers similar plates supporting abortion rights…Judge Fox said: The State’s offering of a Choose Life license plate in the absence of a pro-choice plate constitutes viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment…The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Legal Foundation had filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina in Sept. 2011 on behalf of North Carolinians seeking a specialty license plate that supports a woman’s right to reproductive freedom. ‘This is a great victory for the free speech rights of all North Carolinians, regardless of their point of view on reproductive freedom,’ said Chris Brook, legal director of the ACLU-NCLF.”

Apparently, according to the article, six amendments were proposed in the state that would have allowed production of counter license plates that say “Trust Women. Respect Choice,” or variations on that theme.

On the surface, this seems fairly relevant; but when you think about it, this issue of  “fairness” stinks. Think about it:

1. Those who have pro-life license plates are advocating for something positive. Though pro-lifers have been decried by the media and Hollywood as angry woman-haters; the pro-life movement is inherently positive. Advocating for the lives of the unborn is nothing but good.

2. Though the pro-choicers claim they are fighting the good fight, and speaking truth to power; their message is inherently negative. They claim to be advocating for women’s rights, but while doing that, they are indirectly supporting infanticide.

So, what do we have here? We have a legal war raging over a license plate. We have pro-choice advocates whining about their “right” to have a pro-infanticide license plate. How dare the state of North Carolina respect the lives of the unborn in the form of a piece of metal tacked to the back of your car! It’s worse than the Holocaust!

In all seriousness, this is absurd. Do pro-choice advocates and the ACLU have nothing better to do than make a ruckus over license plates? I guess not. There is no grand point to this article other than to show how far off the tracks the Left has gone in this country. Sometimes you just have to laugh at how ridiculous life can be. As Charlie Chaplin said: “A day without laughter is a day wasted.”
