“The toughest part of a D&E abortion is extracting the baby’s head. The head of a baby that age is about the size of a large plum and is now free floating inside the uterine cavity…You will know you have it right when you crush down on the clamp and see white gelatinous material coming through the cervix. That was the baby’s brains. You can then extract the skull pieces. Many times a little face will come out and stare back at you.”
That passage was just a small part of a much larger speech made by Dr. Anthony Levatino; a doctor, who over the course of his career, has performed over 1200 abortions. Yesterday, Dr. Levatino spoke before a Congressional committee, urging them to support the passage of a bill that would effectively ban abortions after 20 weeks.
Dr. Levatino, following a personal family tragedy, is now pro-life. But prior to his conversion, he performed numerous abortions; some of which were executed on infants as far along as 24 weeks. In his testimony to the Congressional committee, he describes his previous work in such gruesome detail–as you read in the quote above–in order that the committee may look past the smoke and mirrors, and see abortion for what it truly is. The following is a selected excerpt:
“In my 33-year career, I have been privileged to practice obstetrics and gynecology in both private and university settings…We practiced general obstetrics and gynecology but abortion was definitely part of that practice. Relatively few gynecologists in upstate NY would perform such a procedure and we saw an opportunity to expand our abortion practice…Imagine if you can that you are a pro-choice obstetrician/gynecologist like I once was. Your patient today is 24 weeks pregnant…If you could see her baby, which is quite easy on an ultrasound, she would be as long as your hand plus a half from the top of her head to the bottom of her rump not counting the legs. Your patient has been feeling her baby kick for the last 2 months or more…Once you have grasped something inside [with the Sopher clamp], squeeze on the clamp to set the jaws and pull hard–really hard. You feel something let go and out pops a fully formed leg about six inches long. Reach in again and grasp whatever you can. Set the jaw and pull really hard once again and out pops an arm about the same length. Reach in again and again with that clamp and tear out the spine, intestines, heart and lungs…Congratulations! You just affirmed her right to choose…If you refuse to believe that this procedure inflicts severe pain on that unborn child, please think again.”
Dr. Levatino goes on to denounce the oft-referred to practice of terminating the life of a child in order to save a mother’s life. He mentions that the abortion procedure required for such a situation often takes more time than the woman has left. It is unnecessary. In regard to saving the life of the mother, he references C-section as a viable alternative to termination:
“During my time at Albany Medical Center I managed hundreds of such cases by ‘terminating’ pregnancies to save mother’s lives. In all those hundreds of cases, the number of unborn children that I had to deliberately kill was zero.”
This is a man who has firsthand experience dealing with the practice of abortion. Dr. Levatino has a depth of understanding that not a single pro-abortion politician has. The pro-abortion lobbyists bray on about “women’s rights” when they have no actual conceptualization of the heinous procedure of abortion. Dr. Levatino is a man with whom the pro-abortion activists cannot argue, because he used to be one of them.
To see God, we must first see the Devil. To understand what is right, we must know what is wrong. To understand good, we must look directly into the eyes of darkness. How can we turn away from evil if we don’t recognize it?
And in that lack of recognition lies the problem. Abortion is just a word; it has no association in the United States outside of its tenuous connection with a vague, and theoretical type of “women’s rights.” Abortion, when described in detail by someone who has the clinical experience, takes on an association closer to the truth. Dr. Levatino has articulated—In excruciating, bloody detail—the true nature of the beast.
We need more people like him. We need an informed populace; a people that fully grasp what we are dealing with in terms of abortion. Dr. Levatino has looked into the eyes of darkness, and returned to testify. I pray that with his testimony, every single citizen of the United States can look directly in the face of this monster called abortion, and with that experience, help stop the American genocide.
