The god of Anthea Butler

Immediately after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, religious “scholar” at the University of Pennsylvania, one Anthea Butler, responded that the American god was a “white racist god with a problem” who is “carrying a gun and stalking young black men.”

The problem is one of perspective. Ms. Butler views Christianity through the lens of the color of her skin. Many white Americans do the same, viewing their god through a lens of the “American Dream.” However, it is beyond unfair to attempt to paint the entire white, American Christian community with this broad brush.

Also, her attempt to besmirch American Christianity with the broad strokes of racism is demeaning, as well.

Acts 17:26, “and He made from one, every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times, and the boundaries of their habitation,”

racism_black-or-whiteWhile Christianity has often been claimed in the name of evil, it has also been the rallying cry of those who have done good. During the Civil Rights movement, many white clergy marched with Dr. King in his fight for equality. Further back during the Civil War, many a Union boy went off to fight for the notion that Christianity taught the equality of men. America’s Christian underpinnings were inherited from Great Britain and the battle to end slavery there had a uniquely Christian dogma. The fight of men like William Wilberforce and his preacher, John Newton, marked the turn of the tide against race based slavery.

There are numerous problems with American society and morality today. Racism is just one issue among a multitude of evils that remain a stain on our nation. The fact that George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin lends no credence to Ms. Butler’s claim of a “white, racist American god.” What Martin’s death does prove is that evil exists in our world today because of sinful men. Sinful men who would spit in the face of a just God and glorify violence, immoral sexuality, hateful speech and addiction to drugs, alcohol, and various other substances.

Mark 7:21-23, “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. “All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”

sadgodracismMs. Butler, the problem is not the god of white Americans, but the gods/idols of a sinful people. While you may rightly decry the god that some in America worship, you yourself worship a god of your own making–one who sees first the color of skin, then provides comfort based on your own personal prescriptions. That is not a god of any sort Ms. Butler, but an idol that you have imagined. Your god is small Ms. Butler, and not the God that Scripture teaches us about.

Lamentations 3:37-38, “Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, unless the Lord has commanded itIs it not from the mouth of the Most High that both good and ill go forth?”

Our God is an almighty God, who has always existed and who loves and rules perfectly. While we may not understand all that transpires under His Sovereign rule we can be sure that His ways are perfect and His reasons better than any that we can devise.
