P. J. O’Rourke said: “Anyway, no drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.”
There is an astounding volume of stupidity in the world. One would like to believe that all of our education, parenting, social interactions, and philosophizing would combine to make us intelligent. I’m not even suggesting genius level intelligence, merely basic logical intelligence. However, our society continues to breed ignorance, and it just so happens that many of the most ignorant in our world get featured on TV.
In an article n NewsBusters, media mogul Ted Turner is quotes as saying:
“Well, I came up with the idea at least 20 years ago that we needed more women in politics. It would take a different turn. And I suggested that men be barred from political office. They could do everything else, be president of universities, business leaders, but they just couldn’t serve in any elected position for 100 years. I think we’d have a lot more emphasis on education and healthcare and a lot less on Army and the Navy and the Marine Corps. It would be a very positive step, but it hasn’t happened yet. But it still might. And then they just toss in the towel. They can’t come up with a budget.”
In Turner’s very finite imagination, a world in which women are the sole elected representatives is a peaceful, loving place. With this statement, he implies that men, by their very nature, are unfit to govern—at least that women, by their nature alone, would govern with more empathy. He believes they would govern altruistically.
There are several things wrong with what Ted Turner said, not the least of which is his lack of understanding of human nature. As human beings, we are all susceptible to greed and bad choices. It is not only men who have faults. Faults may manifest slightly differently based on gender, but we are all essentially flawed in the same way. He also implies that the reason behind the failure to pass consistent budgets is gender based. With no evidence to support that–not to mention basic life knowledge—Turner’s implications are nothing more than fantasies.
I am so tired of gender-based politics. I am sick of Liberals’ misguided belief that women are so much more capable than men when it comes to governing. How many times can I be told that I shouldn’t have an opinion on abortion because I’m a man? These ignorant, gender-politics people labor under the delusion that estrogen makes one a better leader. We are all human beings, living on the same planet, suffering under the same conditions. Does Ted Turner really believe that gender matters?
War, famine, greed, and power-lust cannot hold a candle to sheer stupidity.
