A Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Taxes Go Up

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), an idiot, wants to tax each spoon of sugar in sugary drinks in order to reduce the caloric intake of consumers:

The measure (HB 5279), introduced Wednesday says, “A 20-ounce bottle of soda contains about 16 teaspoons of sugars. Yet, the American Heart Association recommends that Americans consume no more than six to nine teaspoons of sugar per day.”

Even though the manufacturers’ of the sweet drinks are targeted to pay the tax, the text of the bill itself notes that the goal is to reduce public consumption through a price increase.

That is so unfuriating. What is it with New England Democrats and wanting to control people’s every personal decision? First we had the Soda Nanny in New York trying to limit drink sizes from the soda fountain, and now we’re being subjected to a sugar tax on sugary beverages.

A little voice in my head reminds me that this country started a revolution over something like this. What was it? Oh, yeah. Great Britain’s stinking sugar tax! At least they won’t have a tax on their tea up there. Since their tea is sugarless. Gross.

If every person in the US wants to drink Coke all day long, sit on their bottoms, get really fat, and die young from diabeetuss, no one should care. But we’ve been forced to care by socialized medicine. Laws have to be passed to control what people drink, eat, do and don’t do, etc. Of course, it’s fine if you are having unprotected anal sex—we’ll pay for your antiretroviral medication, no doubt. It’s also fine if you’re a drug addict. We’ll pay for rehab, no question. But don’t you dare drink a sugary beverage. Yeah, that makes total sense.

Why do people keep voting these deranged politicians into office? And don’t they have anything better to do? They can’t balance a budget, restrain the President, reign in our intelligence agencies, or do anything else that’s actually important. But they can tax your beverages.

Let’s stage a Soda Party in some New England port if they pass this stupid law. We can dump big bottles of soda into their harbors and whatnot. We can even dress up like Native Americans. I’m sure that will really get under some politically correct skin.
