Peyton Robinson had flown his 4-foot by 6-foot American flag and a POW-MIA flag in the back of his pickup last year as well as a month this year, and no one said anything about them. Then, a few days ago, an official at South Carolina’s York Comprehensive High where Peyton attends instructed him to remove the flags, because the school had gotten some “complaints” about them, and since they don’t want to offend those complainers, their only recourse was to offend the offending person by telling him to stop being so patriotic. Peyton was told to remove his flags when he got home that day and never to bring them back on school property. During that day while Peyton was in class, the official went out and confiscated the flags.
Well, being a good Southern boy, he wasn’t about to let that one slide. He recounted the situation on Facebook, which got a bunch of other students and parents riled up. Breitbart reported:
CBS News reports that Robinson was angered over the incident, because he “has several family members who served in the armed forces.”
On May 14, parents and veterans rallied outside the school, flying their own flags in outrage. WBTV 3 reports that York Comprehensive administrators decided their policy might not be best, and they announced that Robinson can fly his flags if he so chooses.
Just before noon, the school district posted the following announcement on its website:
“Due to the outstanding display of patriotism through peaceful demonstration, it is apparent to us that many are not happy about this policy. School officials have reviewed the standing policy regarding flags and have decided that an exception will be made for the American flag, as long as the size of the flag(s) does not create a driving hazard.”
Robinson admitted he was “pretty angry” when initially told to take the flags down. He said of himself, “Just proud to be an American.”
Officials changed their tune about why they wanted Robinson to remove his flags. Robinson said that there were complaints about them, and since the school didn’t want anyone offended by the flags, he was told to remove them. Now, they’re saying that Robinson was told to remove them because it was a “driving hazard.” Why do they care about it being a driving hazard? Are they the police now?
Frankly, it’s a little surprising that they changed their mind about the flags and made an exception for the American flag. I halfway expected them to make an exception only for the Mexican flag. That would of course be offensive, but only to white conservatives, and no one cares about them.
