School Forced to Reinstate Porn Viewing Teacher with $200,000 in Back Pay

In 2009, Glacier Creek Middle School science teacher Andrew Harris showed a female teacher at the school an image of a nude woman on his school computer.  She reported the incident which launched an investigation by the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, in Middleton, Wisconsin which is about 6 miles west of Madison.

The investigation discovered that Harris had been viewing porn at school on school owned computers while being paid by the school.  Additionally, he was sharing the porn with others, including several other teachers.  They also found that Harris had received a number of emails from his sister that violated the schools acceptable use policy.

In 2010, Harris was terminated from his teaching job.  Other teachers were given suspensions that ranged from 3 to 15 days or they just received a reprimand.  Seven teachers, including Harris filed a grievance with the Middleton Education Association (MEA) union.

In February 2012, an arbitrator ruled that Harris had been treated unfairly compared to the punishment the other teachers received and that the school district needed to reinstate him as a teacher at the same pay grade and that Harris was entitled to back pay from the time he was fired.  The District appealed the arbitrators ruling all the way to the Wisconsin State Supreme Court.  However, the state’s high court recently announced that they would not hear the case.

After spending over $1 million in legal fees, the school district felt it had no alternative but to offer Harris a teaching position as a science teacher at Kromrey Middle School and to pay him the $200,000 in back pay.  Harris returned to the classroom as the second semester of school started up.

Julianne Appling, President of Wisconsin Family Action commented about the reinstatement of Harris, saying:

“The issue right now is turning on a legal fine point, and what’s being lost in this is that this man – on school time, on a school computer, using public funds – viewed pornography and shared it with others.  And he gets his job back and gets back pay.”

“Perhaps next session somebody will get time to look at what needs to be done to prevent this.  You’d like the local school board to have the authority to take care of it and not go to arbitration; that’s the case here.”

I have a question for parents of students at Kromrey Middle School: How do you like your kid being taught by a teacher who spends his time at school looking at porn and sharing it with others?  Does anyone know if he showed any images to students?  Do you want to take that chance with your kids?

If I were a parent of a Kromrey school student, I would be raising a stink with the school district office and demanding that my kids have no contact with Andrew Harris and if need be, transfer them to a different middle school.  Better yet, parents at Kromrey need to pull their kids out of the public school system and either enroll them in a private school or homeschool them.  That way you can control what they learn and what they are and are not exposed to.  You owe it to your kids, to yourself and to America’s next generation of leaders.
