“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” – Abraham Lincoln
Politics is a game of tricks. Everyone knows this. Politicians know this more than others. But sometimes, honesty can be its own trick. The devil knows that truth. So, in a culture of corruption, in which every gesture has the potential to be a trick, what does one do? In Washington, apparently, one falls for the same tricks over and over again.
Why don’t we learn? According to Tony Lee of Breitbart:
“House Republicans who support amnesty may ultimately make a deal with Democrats in which they put amnesty above enforcement…Politico suggested that to make the bill more palatable to Democrats, ‘Congress could empower state and local law enforcement officials only after’ illegal immigrants ‘start their legalization process.'”
Wait, what? Haven’t Republicans learned enough from history to know that should legalization come prior to enforcement, there will be no enforcement? It’s not as if we have to look very far back either. Only twenty-eight years ago, a very similar situation played out in which legalization was put ahead of border control. This adjustment of priorities led to speedy legalization of illegal immigrants, and—guess what?—no border security measures.
Beyond exact comparisons, we need only look at every single “compromise” made over the last thirty years to see that Democrats NEVER keep their promises. It’s a classic situation. I’ll gladly pay you tomorrow for a hamburger today! It’s Lucy and the football. We go to punt, and the Democrats pull the ball away. They get their laugh, and all we get is a bruised butt.
How many times can Republicans fall for the same ploy?! Perhaps they’re not as dumb as I think they are. Maybe this is clearly designed. Ever since the 2008 presidential loss, Republican leadership has been under the impression that to win, we need to be more like the Democrats. The truth is actually the exact opposite. The reason we lost in 2008, and 2012 is because we had moved too far toward the Left. Republican leadership supports amnesty because they stupidly believe that if they support law-breakers, those law-breakers will vote for them come 2016. It’s insanity.
There are two possibilities here, and both of them are rotten to the core. Either Republicans are profoundly dumb, or they are profoundly dumb in a different way. WAKE UP! Listen to your base! Don’t cave to the demands of the Democrats! The Democrats have dug a trap, and the Republicans are not falling, but gladly jumping in.
Apparently, you can fool Republicans all of the time.
