Yes there is a war on conservative women. Remember binders full of women? I sure do. Following the presidential debate in the fall of 2012 in which Mitt Romney tried to emphasize his commitment to gender diversity by telling the moderator that he had literally “binders full of women,” the liberal machine came out to utterly destroy him. What Romney meant was that he had numerous female candidates, whose profiles were kept in binders for reference, just like any other candidate has. But the way in which he said it lead to a tidal wave of mockery. This mockery tied in perfectly with the left’s narrative of Romney being a part of the Republican “war on women.”
The “war on women” was a phrase that really gained traction during the 2012 election cycle. It put a glossy veneer on the left’s notion that conservatives despise women. It was a catchy, and alliterative way to say Republicans are douches, who think women aren’t worth as much as men. This belief stems from the fact that conservatives are opposed to abortions, allegedly don’t support equal pay, and don’t believe that employers who are morally opposed to contraception, and abortifacients should have to cover them on their employee’s insurance plan. Of course, as any sane person knows, allowing employers to forgo paying for contraception, and abortion pills doesn’t keep women from purchasing them. Additionally, the reasoning behind the Republican opposition to the equal pay act was complex, and completely unrelated to a hatred of women, or a belief that women should not be paid equally for equal work. Let’s actually examine that one in brief.
First, when factors such as taking time off for child bearing, and female/males degree, and career variations are taken out of the equation, women are actually paid comparably to men. Second, the notion that women are only paid 77 cents for every dollar made by men, is false. That statistic is based on gross income, without regard to every other mitigating factor, of which there are many. If you want an in depth, and fascinating analysis of the alleged wage gap, read Economic Facts & Fallacies by renowned economist Thomas Sowell. Additionally, The Daily Beast (a very liberally biased publication) published a piece regarding the wage gap, and concluded that once college degree choice is taken out of the equation, the alleged wage gap shrinks to less than five cents. And that’s not even taking into account the numerous other factors at play. The study on which the article is based shows that men tend to take on the most remunerative college majors, while women are attracted to the less remunerative majors, such as counseling psychology, and teaching. I’m not alleging that women are never discriminated against, I’m simply saying that the pay gap theory is wildly inaccurate, and that it’s being used against Republicans wrongly.
Republicans in congress opposed the equal pay act, first, because it would have done nothing to alter the current state, given the actual reasons behind the wage gap are not based on discrimination, and second, because it was worded in such a way as to give an opportunity to trial lawyers to make insane amounts of money off of unsuspecting women.
Now that that’s out of the way. While the left has convinced millions of Americans that Republicans are waging some kind of war on women, it is actually the left that has little respect for the fairer sex. Consider the way the media has treated Sarah Palin since her veep candidacy in 2008. A new story recently broke alleging that Palin and her family were in a drunken brawl. The story swept the news. The New York Post mockingly wrote that “the backwoods brawling began after the clan rolled up to the soiree in a stretch Hummer.” Supremely condescending. As it turns out, however, the story isn’t what it seems. According to John Nolte of Breitbart:
“But all of this emanated from an anti-Palin gossip blogger who admitted she didn’t care about the truth and had no desire to discover the truth.”
Even the writer of the piece (gossip columnist Amanda Coyne) said that she had “little time to track down the details of the brawl. And even if I did, I’d probably pass,” and that “the details are a little sketchy.” As it turns out, the true story of the brawl is much less scandalous. Apparently, an ex-boyfriend of Willow Palin became aggressive, and her brother, and several others stepped in with the intention to defend her. Regardless of what actually happened, the national media, including The New York Times, CNN, and MSNBC jumped at the chance to take a bite out of Sarah Palin.
The lack of interest on the part of the national media to actually investigate what happened, instead of leaping for the throat to get as much blood as possible, is indicative of the lack of respect they have for women. Let me rephrase that. The left does respect women…so long as they are liberal. If they are conservative, the claws come out. Liberals can call Sarah Palin a c**t, caribou Barbie, and a million other things, but they vomit blood if anyone makes even a policy critique of Hillary Clinton.
This is a very obvious double standard. The ubiquity of the poorly sourced and unverified Sarah Palin brawl story is further proof of that. Women only matter if they agree, women only matter if they use contraception, and women only matter if they aren’t conservative. This behavior of treating women as unequal based on their political ideology is the exact opposite of what the left preaches. The left treats conservative women like trash, and exalts liberal women to deity status. In the end, all the left wants is a demographic. Votes. Greed. A faceless machine.
Equality if…you are like us, equality if…you don’t dissent.
