There are many people alive today whose mothers and doctors intended to kill through abortion, but failed in their attempt. Some of the more outspoken examples of abortion survivors are staunchly pro-life. But Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said she’s not aware of babies surviving the abortion process.
At the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing, Richards was questioned by various legislators in the wake of undercover videos surfacing, showing biomedical and Planned Parenthood personnel discussing the sale of aborted babies and/or their body parts. The Blaze reported:
Richards’ response came after Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis asked her if a child should be “given nourishment and medical care” if he or she “survives an abortion attempt.”
“I’ve never heard of such a circumstance happening,” she said, sparking brief silence in the room. “I can say at Planned Parenthood, I am aware of no instance … we don’t provide abortions after viability.”
Richards continued, “In my experience at Planned Parenthood, we haven’t ever had that kind of circumstance.”
She was then asked more generally if she would say that medical care would be in order if such a situation unfolded.
“I want to be responsible for Planned Parenthood and what we do there,” Richards said. “Certainly in that situation — which again has never occurred that I know of — a baby born … that baby should, as the mother should, get appropriate medical care from the physician. And would.”
Melissa Ohden is one such abortion survivor. She testified before Congress a few weeks ago, arguing in favor of removing federal funding of Planned Parenthood. She said that her mother hadn’t gone to a Planned Parenthood facility to get her abortion, but if she had, she wouldn’t be alive today:
“I have long believed that if my birthmother’s abortion would have taken place at a Planned Parenthood, I would not be here today. Completing over 300,000 abortions a year provides them with the experience to make sure that ‘failures’ like me don’t happen.”
One of the things the undercover videos brought to light was a case where an official was talking about a baby whose heart was still beating. That was the baby from whom they were going to procure brain tissue. If the baby’s heart was still beating, I think that would be considered alive. Of course, all they have to do is redefine “alive” so that they can claim that none of their abortions resulted in any survivors.
