Obama’s “Support” Of Syrian Rebels: Help Them Not Win

I hate the fact that we have presumed to intervene in Syria. I hate our arrogance in telling that region how it should be governed. I hate the fact that our efforts degrading the Assad regime permit Christians to be tortured and killed by Jihadists because the Syrian government is unable to protect them. I hate the fact that our weapons and supplies are inevitably going to end up in the hands of people who torture and kill Christians and others for sport.

But I still can’t believe how, on top of all that arrogance and stupidity, the Obama Administration is adding another layer. They are “supporting” the moderate rebels to not win.

According to the Washington Post:

“The CIA is expanding a clandestine effort to train opposition fighters in Syria amid concern that moderate, U.S.-backed militias are rapidly losing ground in the country’s civil war, U.S. officials said. But the CIA program is so minuscule that it is expected to produce only a few hundred trained fighters each month even after it is enlarged, a level that officials said will do little to bolster rebel forces that are being eclipsed by radical Islamists in the fight against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.”

Does this sound like a problem? It does to me. I thought this paragraph would lead to a report that the administration wants to massively increase training and supplies to these alleged moderates. But no. Not winning is actually the plan!

“The CIA’s mission, officials said, has been defined by the White House’s desire to seek a political settlement, a scenario that relies on an eventual stalemate among the warring factions rather than a clear victor. As a result, officials said, limits on the agency’s authorities enable it to provide enough support to help ensure that politically moderate, U.S.-supported militias don’t lose but not enough for them to win.

I can’t believe I’m reading this. By supporting these people so little that they are guaranteed to “not win,” we are deliberately calculating to have them lose battles. In other words, it is official US policy for us to get these moderates killed (just not too many) and to make sure that they die and are wounded for no purpose, because we are going to thwart their victory.

The idea that we can actually pull off such a balancing act is just prideful and silly. But even more importantly, this really means we are not their friends at all. I realize that these people are all the way out in Syria and all, but eventually someone at an internet café is going to pass on the plan to the rebels. If I were Assad I would be printing up leaflets right now to circulate out in the countryside. The moderate rebels may end up immoderately hating the US. And I wouldn’t blame them.

This is both stupid and treacherous. It is the plan of a unprincipled psychopath.
