Liberals are generally responding with something like, “Well, what else is he going to do, walk?” Why should anyone care that Air Force One will emit 161 metric tons of carbon dioxide during his trip to Alaska? I don’t think anyone should care. The only reason this is newsworthy is that carbon-emitting means of travel, such as by air, are always demonized by those on the left. The New York Times called air travel the biggest carbon sin:
For many people reading this, air travel is their most serious environmental sin. One round-trip flight from New York to Europe or to San Francisco creates a warming effect equivalent to 2 or 3 tons of carbon dioxide… The average American generates about 19 tons of carbon dioxide a year; the average European, 10.
Shame on those Americans generating 19 tons of carbon dioxide a year. If that’s considered high, then how about Obama’s 161 tons in just one trip:
Obama’s visit to the Arctic comes amid this administration’s push to build support for an international agreement on global warming. The administration recently released its Clean Power Plan, which aims to cut carbon dioxide emissions from power plants by 32 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.
“I’m going because Alaskans are on the frontlines of one of the greatest challenges we face this century: climate change,” Obama said in a video announcing his Alaskan visit. “In Alaska, glaciers are melting… the state’s God-given natural treasures are all at risk.”
But like his trip to the Everglades earlier this year, Obama may not want to draw too much attention to how he will be getting to Alaska. The president will be taking Air Force One, which uses jet fuel — a petroleum product that emits carbon dioxide when burned. That means Obama will be contributing massively on an individual scale
Obama will travel at least 3,361 miles from Washington, D.C., to Alaska’s Elmendorf Air Force Base (where Air Force One generally stops to refuel) on his transnational global warming tour. Air Force One will burn about 16,805 gallons of jet fuel, emitting 161 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
The ruling class is always allowed to break their own rules that they enforce on everyone else. Obama is, after all, flying for a good cause. He’s got to get up to Alaska somehow to sound the alarm about the melting ice caps caused by global warming, which is caused largely by…airplanes.
If we really are experiencing global warming, and if global warming really is caused by carbon-emitting humans, then there is no excuse for anyone to fly in an airplane, especially the President, who’s supposed to lead by example. If Obama has something to say to the Alaskans about ice caps and global warming, does he really have to be there in Alaska to say it? For the sake of the environment, shouldn’t he just send them a video message or telecommute?
Or is it more likely that manmade global warming is a giant scam, and politicians on the left are milking it for all it’s worth?
