Greta Hawkins is the principal of New York City’s PS 90 school. Although Hawkins says she is not anti-patriotic, her actions as principal say otherwise.
In 2012, the kindergartners at her school were going to sing God Bless America at their graduation ceremony at the end of the year. When Hawkins found out, she forbade the kids from signing the patriotic song. The reason she gave the teachers is that it might offend other cultures. The Coney Island school has a number of students from other countries including India, Mexico, Pakistan and Russia.
When the Hawkins banning of God Bless America hit the news, many people questioned her patriotism. She claimed it had nothing to do about patriotism and everything to do about offending foreigners. Basically, Hawkins was more concerned about offending people who immigrated to America than offending Americans who already live here.
Hawkins justified her actions to the higher-ups in the Department of Education that the lyrics to God Bless America were too grown up for the 5 year old kids. However, Hawkins did allow the kindergartners to sing Justin Bieber’s song ‘Baby’ which is a lot more grown up than God Bless America.
Then last September, Hawkins eliminated the signing of America the Beautiful during the daily reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Now Hawkins has once again nixed more patriotic celebration. This time she has targeted the pre-K 4 years olds at their moving-up ceremony. The teachers had planned for the kids to wave American flags and sing Stand Up for the Red, White and Blue as they entered the auditorium.
What was Hawkins’ reason this time? The teachers hadn’t gotten permission from her for the kids to sing the patriotic song and wave their tiny American flags. She actually scolded the teachers for not getting her permission in advance. The kids will be permitted to sing You Are My Sunshine and What a Miracle I Am during the ceremony, but to date, Hawkins continues to ban the singing of the patriotic song as they march in. Not only has Hawkins banned the singing of the song, she has also nixed the kids waving their American flags.
One mother of a pre-K student is livid over the anti-patriotic actions of the principal. She stated:
“I’m angry about it. It’s the American flag. What’s wrong with that? So many soldiers died for it. Why is she against the red, white and blue?”
I found a photo of Principal Greta Hawkins that may explain her anti-patriotic actions. The photo shows her standing and smiling next to then New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a beach opening. Associating with the liberal anti-Second Amendment mayor would suggest that she might also be liberal, of which many are anti-American. Then, I saw that she was black and could possibly have similar anti-patriotic views as our black president who refuses to wear an American flag lapel pin, holding his hand over his heart during the playing of the national anthem or his often snubbing of the military and patriotic things.
Sadly, this seems to be a growing trend in our country. Our school system is teaching students not to be patriotic and that America is the world’s villain. A recent Rasmussen Reports indicated that 65% of the American people said they would rather be called good citizens than a patriot. Only 25% of the people polled said that being a patriot is more important than being a good citizen.
This is the effect of a generation of socialistic brainwashing of the public schools. They are being trained to be loyal to the liberal progressive government instead of being loyal to what America once stood for and now they’re children are being trained to be just like them.
