Liberal extraordinaire Rahm Emanuel famously said: “You never let a serious crisis go to waste.”
The left really took those words to heart after the Amtrak derailment on Tuesday. The accident, which killed seven and left hundreds injured, has led to a political debate about Amtrak funding, and how the evil Republicans want to downsize.
According to Reuters, the train “…was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour, over twice the speed limit, when it entered a curve in the tracks and derailed…”
The New York Daily News reports that Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said of the engineer controlling the train:
“There’s no way in the world that he should have been going that fast into the curve…Clearly, he was reckless and irresponsible in his actions. I don’t know what was going on with him.”
Some are saying a system that would have automatically slowed the train down, called “Positive Train Control,” could have prevented the crash–and they may be correct. However, the liberal media, as well as Democratic politicians have used the crash (the cause of which appears to be human error) to hang a political noose around the necks of Republican lawmakers.

This type of reaction is all too typical of liberals. Tragedy strikes, and they blame lack of funding.
I’m surprised they didn’t call out for better infrastructure funding after 9/11. If only we put more money into making the buildings stronger, the planes wouldn’t have done enough damage to cause collapse! Then again, buildings aren’t typically designed with the expectation of planes being flown into them, and trains aren’t meant to be driven at twice their speed limit while hitting a curve.
As Jonah Goldberg noted in his piece about the crash, it’s never enough for the left. Liberals always want more money, but the money is never spent wisely.
The Manhattan Institute reports:
“Amtrak’s largest expense is labor, salary, and benefits, which cost over $2 billion in 2014.
…management allowed employee misconduct and wasteful business practices to thrive, even as at the same time it hindered plans to make train stations accessible to the disabled to comply with the Americans with Disability Program.
Amtrak’s did not meet ADA’s goals due to lack of structure and a strategy, according to a 2014 IG report. Management activities took up 46% of the $100 million budget, $6.5 million was spent on unrelated projects, and an undetermined amount was shipped out of state on non-ADA projects.”
As the left screams at Republicans for wanting to cut funding for a system that loses massive amounts of money annually, they don’t seem to care much about where the money goes, or how it could be more wisely spent. As long as as money is being funneled into government projects, they don’t care how much is wasted or mismanaged. Perhaps some of the bloated salaries of Amtrak employees could have been allocated to the “Positive Train Control” system.
Liberals love to throw money at problems and then run a victory lap. When the problem persists, and conservatives want funding reduced, liberals bring out their giant red “EVIL” stamp.
The derailment has only given the left more fodder for their “blame Republicans for underfunding” fire.
What we’ve learned from this incident so far:
- The crash was likely caused by human error.
- The system that might have prevented the crash probably could have been paid for if Amtrak wasn’t such a bloated hog of a program.
- Throwing money at problems doesn’t solve them if the money is wasted elsewhere.
But never let a crisis go to waste, so…the derailment is the Republicans’ fault. They wanted to reduce spending on a bloated, wasteful, money sucking program, and that’s why the engineer was driving the train 50mph faster that it should have been going.
