Oscar Wilde said: “By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, journalism keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.”
Truly, there is a disappointingly high degree of truth to that sentiment. There was a time—long, long ago—when journalists were respected in the highest regard. There was a time when we had every good reason to respect them: they told us the truth, they were the ones between us and the government, and they were essentially the fourth wheel of government. But now most in the journalist world have their own political agendas; and through happenstance, 99% of them are Liberal.
We cannot trust anything we read in which the author refers to facts, figures or sources, because we fear that we are being misled. And a right fear that is! And it so happens that just as 99% of the media are Liberal, 99% of the misinformation is beneficial to the Democratic Party. That leaves Conservatives in the pocket. Aside from a couple outlets, we are well and truly screwed.
According to Breitbart, one of New Jersey’s biggest papers spread a little misinformation regarding the nature of their sources.
“A new report conducted by a non-partisan group has revealed detailed research about the economic impact that comprehensive immigration reform would have on states.”
As it turns out, their supposedly “non-partisan” sources are nothing of the sort. Both the Center for American Progress and The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees are ardently Leftist. CAP is funded by the Left, and the Union is a public sector union—which means they are close to entirely Liberal. Google it.
The Trentonian’s article goes on to say that the economic impacts of the immigration bill will be generally positive. There will be many people who read this biased, partisan article, and believe it fully. Their rationale will be: Why would a journalist lie?
We (by whom I mean those of us who understand the true nature of biased journalism) will not be harmed by this lie; and to some, it may not seem like a big deal. This is endemic. One lie can be tolerated, like the common cold is tolerated by the human body, but a national press full of liars is a deadly disease to our democracy.
This bias can have devastating effects. First, out of those who read this flawed article comes a set of people who may no longer believe that amnesty will have a negative impact on the United States. Second, this will translate to those people being dismissive of any Conservative that tells them otherwise. Third, those people may tell their friends and family about this article, misinforming numerous others. Finally, this article is far from a one-off problem. Our entire country is spoon-fed misinformation on a daily basis, and a large percentage fall victim to this nonsense because they don’t know any better. This leads to a portion of our population voting for Liberals because those candidates spout the same misinformation that Americans have lapped up from the media.
This is huge. This can change our country. It is up to us to do the best we can to inform those around us, to strike down the lies that are being told. We are up against a well-oiled machine, but we’ve seen how well grass-roots efforts can work. It is not too late, if we simply try.
Nothing is isolated. Every small thing in life has larger consequences. Don’t ever let someone tell you that press bias is not a big deal.
