“Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.” – Susan B. Anthony
The VMAs were held a couple weeks ago, and watching the endless display of overly-sexualized women got me thinking about what real feminism is versus what it’s been contorted into.
Feminism, the kind advocated by Susan B. Anthony, was purposeful and legitimate. Susan B. Anthony not only sought for the abolition of slavery from the time she was a teenager, she worked tirelessly for the rights of women. And by “the rights of women,” I mean real rights. Anthony wanted women to be seen not as man’s underlings, but as their equals in the eyes of the law.
Anthony’s dogged efforts eventually led to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which states:
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
Susan B. Anthony—along with many other suffragettes—carved out a path for women to have all the rights of men. Their efforts were noble, courageous, and often harrowing. Fast forward to today, where the Tumblr-ization of America has transformed feminism from a worthy position to a monstrous skank-off.
Feminism used to stand for ethical equality; it used to be a pursuit which had in mind the goal of lawful equality—men and women being treated equally in the voting booth, in the workplace, and in society at large. Now, feminism has become a pissing contest in which the singular pursuit is the out-slutting of men.
Thanks to the sexual revolution of the 1960’s, we have Miley Cyrus cat-crawling across the VMA stage in mesh and pasties. Yay, equality? And if you dare criticize the Mileys of the world, you are immediately labeled as sexist or misogynist, which is by definition the opposite of a feminist. But how is miming sex acts on stage and flaunting your genitalia the definition of feminism? How are these acts and this behavior advancing the cause of women’s rights? What equality is being achieved?
These women have debased themselves in order to compete with men. There was a time when women trudged up mountains in order to secure for themselves and all women the best the American Dream had to offer, now they’re lying in gutters, competing for the title of lowest life-form.
Newsflash: Trying to be as skanky as men isn’t social evolution, it’s social devolution. The only idea modern feminism is promoting is that a woman’s value is based solely on her sexuality, rather than her personhood–which is the exact opposite of their alleged goals.
Moral high-ground was achieved, and then there was nowhere else to go, so modern feminists decided that a complete lack of moral integrity was where equality lay. And they’ve certainly seized the day. Modern feminists are every bit as slutty as their male counterparts. Yay!
But I’m pretty sure Susan B. Anthony is spinning in her grave.
