An unidentified 59-year-old and self-proclaimed pacifist wielding a cane was able to knock the gun out of the hands of an intruder and then shoot the intruder with one fatal shot.
Early Wednesday morning the New Mexico man was awakened when an intruder pepper-sprayed his dog. The intruder then came after the homeowner with a gun and fired a shot that just barely missed the man’s hip. The homeowner knocked the gun out the intruder’s hands with his cane, and the two struggled to obtain control of it. The homeowner was able to wrestle the firearm away from the intruder and only fired one shot at him, and he died at the scene.
The homeowner was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, but according to his lawyer Richard Cravens, he’s “completely traumatized” by the event.
It’s a good thing the homeowner obtained a lawyer. At this point, both the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office and the New Mexico State Police are investigating the incident, and until their investigation is complete, it remains unclear whether the homeowner will face charges.
I’m glad the homeowner wasn’t so much of a pacifist that he thought it would be wrong for him to use any kind of violence ever. If this guy’s a pacifist, then I guess most of us are pacifists. We’ll only use lethal force when we absolutely have to.
He should probably get himself a gun though. Next time, he may not be so fortunate to be able to fight off an intruder using his cane to knock the guy’s gun out of his hand, and then to wrestle the bad guy for control of the gun.
