That’s what the liberal gun-grabbers are calling it, because it loosens some restrictions having to do with where guns can be carried. Here’s NBC News’s account of the bill:
Its official name is the “Safe Carry Protection Act.”
But critics are calling it the “Guns Everywhere Bill.”
At noon Wednesday, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal is scheduled to sign the sweeping legislation into law. One of the most permissive state gun laws in the nation, it will allow licensed owners to carry firearms into more public places than at any time in the past century, including bars and government buildings that don’t have security checkpoints.
The law also authorizes school districts to appoint staffers to carry firearms. It allows churches to “opt-in” if they want to allow weapons. Bars could already “opt-in” to allow weapons, but under the new law they must opt out if they want to bar weapons. Permit-holders who accidentally bring a gun to an airport security checkpoint will now be allowed to pick up their weapon and leave with no criminal penalty.
As usual, the left is predicting a bloodbath resulting from the passage of this law, which goes into effect July 1st. But the bill actually isn’t all that revolutionary. I think it makes things better, but there are still other states in the country that have more gun-friendly laws than Georgia’s.
Even the Atlanta-Journal Constitution’s “PolitiFact” ruled that the liberals’ fears over this bill are completely unfounded. They gave a gun control groups’ statement that it’s the “most extreme gun bill in America” a “mostly false” rating.
There have been some locales in Georgia that have tried nearly mandating gun ownership for homeowners. Kennesaw is one of them. The same thing was predicted then, that a bloodbath would ensue. What actually happened? Well, today, it’s one of the safest places to be in the state. Perhaps even the country.
Look what’s been happening in Detroit ever since a police chief with common sense took over there. He encouraged citizens to protect themselves with guns, because there were going to be situations where waiting on the police would not be feasible. Self-defense shootings have been up, and criminal homicides have been down. Innocent people are able to defend themselves from violent criminals, and they’re winning. Liberals hate it when that happens, when gun ownership is encouraged and there is a marked decrease in crime as a result.
