Darth Vader More Liked than All 2016 Presidential Candidates

Apparently, Americans like Darth Vader more than any of the 2016 presidential candidates. The next runner up in the favorability list comparing political figures with Star Wars characters is Hillary Clinton, neck and neck with the mysterious bounty hunter Boba Fett:

None of the 2016 hopefuls is polling higher than Darth Vader. You’ll recall that Vader chopped off his son’s arm and blew up an entire planet, but evidently in the eyes of the American public these are minor sins compared to BenghaziBridgegate and Gov. Rick Perry’s hipster glasses. These numbers suggest that if “Star Wars” were real and Darth Vader decided to enter the 2016 presidential race, he’d be the immediate front-runner.

I don’t know exactly what to think of polls like these. It’s not necessarily the case that people would actually rather have Darth Vader as president in 2016. This just means Americans care more about Darth Vader than any of the duds the Republicans and Democrats are throwing at us for 2016. And that may just be because Americans don’t really care one way or another about politics right now. Most of us feel disenfranchised and disheartened.

According to another poll, 67% of Americans believe that America is a more divided place now than it was four years ago. Democrats have believed Democrats, Republicans have believed Republicans, and all the while the country has been stolen from us. We care more about the fictional exploits of sci-fi warriors than we do the real politics that hold sway over the country. And while we’re distracted by entertainments and sideshows, the real action has been taking place right under our noses but somehow out of our attention.

It has long been the case that neither Democrats or Republicans are fighting for the interests of the people they purportedly represent. They set us against each other with race baiting, class baiting, morality baiting. They don’t care about any of these things. They care about maintaining power. We need to get our heads out of the sand and take a stand against the very real forces of the dark side in Washington—on both sides of the aisle.
