“A hypocrite is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump and make a speech for conservation.” – Adlai Stevenson
In George Orwell’s 1984, there is a concept called “double think.” It’s a manner of thinking in which one believes two contradictory things to be true at the same time. Though intellectually, one understands these opposites cannot coexist, they occupy the same space in the mind. The left are masters at doublethink. More than that, they are masters at convincing the public that their doublethink isn’t actually hypocrisy.
Remember back when Gabby Giffords was shot, and every liberal on the planet blamed Sarah Palin because of Palin’s website, which placed target symbols over the congressional districts which needed to be focused on by conservatives? Remember when they tried to convince us that Jared Loughner was a conservative? And remember how it turned out that Jared Loughner was just a psycho, and the shooting had absolutely no relation to Sarah Palin’s targets? Yeah, so do I. But the conversation didn’t stop there. For months following the shooting, the left harped endlessly on the lack of civility in politics. They blamed conservatives for using “incendiary language” in the field, and begged for an end to the angry words, despite the fact that “incendiary language” is often metaphors, and figures of speech, which we have used for thousands of years. Meanwhile, the left continued to be just as incendiary as ever.
Now, the very liberal Daily Beast has placed a target over the face of Rand Paul. Yep, not simply over his district, but over a photo of his actual face. What will be the left’s response? Will they launch into diatribes about how awful the Daily Beast is, and how their incendiary imagery can only lead to violence? Nope. They’ll look the other way, because in their minds, it’s ok to be incendiary if you are liberal. No matter what the excuses will be, there will be excuses. Just as a friend to the left, I’ll jot down some excuses they can have at the ready:
– It’s ok, it’s just metaphoric imagery
– It’s no big deal, no one has been shot
– They started it
– It’s Bush’s fault
– Huh? Oh, pshh, get over it!
Can the left convince the public that the work of the Daily Beast is not a big deal without it being hypocritical? They can sure try, but it’s just not true. I look forward to one of my excuses being used by MSNBC in the near future.
