First it was the World War II Memorial. Then it was the ocean. Now, people are getting kicked out of their own homes because of the faux government shutdown. And I’m sure it’s costing taxpayers more just to enforce closure of these people’s homes than if they were left alone.
This particular Nevada couple lives on Lake Mead in a home they’ve lived in since the 70’s. They own the house outright, but since it sits on federal land, a park ranger approached them last week and notified the couple, Joyce and Ralph Spencer, 77 and 80 years old, to vacate the premises within 24 hours. They’d be permitted to retrieve belongings during the day, but they would not be permitted to stay the night.
And yes, because of the government shutdown. The park ranger stated that they wouldn’t be able to “provide any services” as long as the shutdown game continues. A local ABC News affiliate reported:
“I had to go to town today and buy Ralph undershirts and jeans because I forgot his pants,” Joyce Spencer told Action News. The Stewarts Point home sits on federal land, so even though the Spencers own their cabin outright, they’re not allowed in until the government reopens. Park officials said property owners can visit only to retrieve belongings; they sent Action News a statement which reads in part, “Unfortunately overnight stays are not permitted until a budget is passed and the park can reopen.” Joyce Spencer said she’s alright in the meantime, staying with nearby family, but the move was a lot to handle as a senior citizen. “I had to be sure and get his walker and his scooter that he has to go in,” Spencer said. “We’re not hurt in any way except it might cost me if I have to go buy more pants.”
Shutdown or not, it’s their house. We keep hearing the Dems hurl insults at the Tea Party, calling them suicide bombers, kidnappers, arsonists, hostage-takers, etc. Who exactly are the “hostage-takers” when innocent people like the Spencers are being used by the administration to play a stupid political game? They’re holding the Spencers hostage while they try to win this “shutdown” showdown.
