Keep Telling Yourself You Live in a Free Country

“Land of the free, home of the brave” doesn’t apply to the US anymore, but don’t tell that to the brainwashed sheeple still singing it at the top of their lungs. The flat fact is that we’re not brave, no matter which side of the aisle we’re cowering in. As a country, we are motivated almost entirely by fear. Fear of terrorism, fear of conspiracy, fear of conspiracy theorists, fear of global warming, fear of declining industry, fear of job loss, fear of socialism, fear of capitalism, fear Read more […]

Your Government at Work – Regulators Complain that Uber Drivers are “TOO” Efficient

No, this is not a story from the satirical website the Onion. Yes, this is really an idea that your elected (and unelected) government officials have developed in an effort to make our lives “better.” No, I don’t think the people who thought this up realize just how stupid their idea is or just how foolish we all think they are. In major cities across America the ride-sharing company known as Uber has been forced to fight against the entrenched taxi lobby and their prostitutes in the local Read more […]

Bill Gates Apparently Doesn’t Understand How the Private Sector Works

Given the amount of money Bill Gates has made, one would think he already understood how the private sector works. But his recent comments concerning green energy research and the public and private sector makes me think he has no idea what he’s talking about: Yes, the government will be somewhat inept… But the private sector is in general inept. How many companies do venture capitalists invest in that go poorly? By far most of them. Yes. Precisely. It is absolutely necessary for companies Read more […]

No One Really Wants States’ Rights Because No One Really Wants Local Accountability

It’s that simple. States’ Rights advocates all over the country talk about how states have no authority or power and how the federal government has subsumed powers that do not properly belong to it in the Constitution. But the most important piece of this discussion revolves around taxation, and it’s where even some of the most ardent states’ rights folks start to falter. I believe that the only way to return power to local governments is for local governments to be the only tax-collecting Read more […]

Social Security Will Not Get Cost of Living Adjustment in 2016

People on Social Security “benefits” will not see a cost-of-living increase in 2016. This is only the third time since 1975 that this has happened, and Social Security recipients are not happy about it for obvious reasons: The annual cost of living adjustment, or COLA, is based on the government’s measure of inflation. This year’s lack of COLA has Social Security beneficiaries worried. “It’s terrible the way they’re doing old people that have worked all their lives and are barely getting Read more […]

House Votes to Freeze Planned Parenthood Funding for a Year

In what will probably amount to nothing more than a political statement, the House of Representatives voted to freeze federal funding to Planned Parenthood: In a 241-187 vote, nearly all Republicans and two Democrats approved legislation that would block Planned Parenthood’s federal funding for one year, giving time for Congress to fully investigate claims of wrongdoing by the provider. Lawmakers also passed a bill tightening restrictions on abortion doctors who violate infant protections in Read more […]

Why Did the Ahmed Mohamed Clock Case “Blow Up”?

Ahmed Mohamed is a high school student in Texas who was recently suspended for bringing a home-made clock to school. Just why he was detained and suspended is still up for debate, however. The story goes something like this. Ahmed built a digital clock with circuit boards and stuff in a black box he got from Target. He showed it to one of his science teachers, who thought it was cool. But the teacher told Ahmed that he probably shouldn’t show it to any of the other teachers. I imagine the teacher’s Read more […]

Homeland Security Can’t Keep Track of their Warehouses!

Department of Homeland Security officials are wasting taxpayers’ money by failing to keep track of how many warehouses their agencies have. “Because the warehouse inventories are inaccurate, DHS cannot manage warehouses or … limit the size of real property inventories and reduce costs,” the DHS Inspector General said in a report made public Tuesday. “We found buildings that should not have been on the department’s warehouse inventory. Conversely, we found buildings that should have Read more […]

Happy Labor Day! Let Me Tell You a Little Union Story …

Labor Day. It’s that one holiday in the US which basically no one knows how to celebrate. Are we supposed to go to work or not? Aside from eat too much food, what else is there for us to do? Maybe raise our glasses in a toast to the unemployment rate? Or have a moment of silence for the damage that organized labor has done to American jobs, product quality, and international competitiveness? Yeah. Labor Day is a bit of a depressing holiday really. Not to be a wet blanket, but let me tell you Read more […]

After Ashley Madison Hack – Government Secrets at Risk!

Thousands of federal bureaucrats who accessed the Ashley Madison website for extra-marital affairs opened the door for hackers, including those associated with foreign intelligence agencies, to gain access to sensitive government networks and U.S. secrets, according to cybersecurity experts. If even one federal official used a government computer or email to open a fake message from Ashley Madison that contained malware – a technique called “spear phishing” – all of the information stored Read more […]

New Study says Obama Administration Policies Force Poor to Pay More for Food

The poorest Americans could see their food bills soar thanks to a new swathe of regulations from the Food and Drug Administration. Passed in 2010, Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) required the FDA to issue new safety regulations for all foods excluding meat and poultry. A new report from the Mercatus Center argues 10 of the FDA regulations have significantly more costs than benefits. “Imposing ineffective rules on food production is likely to raise food prices and constitute a tax. DHS Chief: “A Perfectly Safe City . . . Will Look Like a Prison”

Truer words were never spoken. I was wondering why the United States was looking so very prison-like in recent years. It appears the reason is that the DHS is working to make us safe. Well, that’s a real load off of my mind. In all seriousness, the DHS chief was talking recently about how it was largely impossible to protect the United States from cyber attack. He wasn’t actually advocating a prison state, really. He was letting the DHS off the hook for its recent failures in cyber security. The Read more […]
