The incident in Ferguson, Missouri brought to the forefront the issue of the militarization of police. But really, that wasn’t the best case to use as an argument against police militarization.
The militarization of police has been going on for a long time. And it’s not just about all the new war toys they get to play with. That’s definitely part of it, and it has the effect of intimidating the masses into subjection.
But more than that, I think it’s the mindset that a growing number of cops have today that civilians are the enemy. A cop’s number one priority is protecting not the people, but himself. That means that if he has to shoot and kill an innocent person “just in case,” then so be it. He has the luxury of shooting first and answering questions later. They’re just civilians. It’s not like they have feelings or anything.
Well, if you thought that the Department of Defense’s giving hand-me-down tanks and other war weaponry to small towns was bad, how about giving them to school districts? The Daily Caller reported:
The latest recipient of a such a vehicle — a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehice, or an MRAP — is the San Diego Unified School District, NBC San Diego reports.
The district obtained its $733,000 war machine through the Defense Department’s 1033 program which distributes excess military gear and equipment to law-enforcement agencies throughout the country.
Recipients generally pay only for transportation and maintenance costs.
“We recognize the public concern over perceived ‘militarization of law enforcement,’ but nothing could be further from the truth for School Police,” San Diego Unified School District police Capt. Joseph Florentino said in a press release, according to NBC San Diego.
“It’ll be designed for us to get into any hostile situation and pull kids out,” he continued. “We can fit about a full elementary class into the back of [the] vehicle.”
I see, so it’s to “protect the children.” Just like a small town with a tank is to “protect the people.” Because you never know if something bad is going to happen.
I can’t help but think of the “arguments” from liberals like Piers Morgan about semi-automatic rifles. They call them “weapons of war.” They say these weapons of war have no place in America, where there’s no war going on.
AR-15s are hardly weapons of war. But MRAPs? Those were literally weapons of war. They were designed to fight against terrorists in Iraq, and they used them. Now they don’t need them anymore, and they’re giving them away practically for free. In America, where’s there’s supposedly no war going on.
So school districts with little elementary students running around can have actual war weapons, but an American civilian can’t have a semi-automatic rifle, because it’s a “weapon of war?” Makes perfect sense.
I’m not sure if the little town I live in has an MRAP or not, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did. Having our local police department parade one of those around town would absolutely not make me feel safe. If it were mine, then sure, I’d feel pretty protected. But since the police are trained nowadays to view me and you automatically as terrorists, especially if we bring up the Constitution – that piece of subversive and treasonous literature – the fact that they have one would scare me to death. How do you think one of those MRAPs makes those little kids feel in that school district? Probably not unlike students in L.A. whose district police have grenade launchers.
