Ben Carson on Abortion: No Exceptions for Rape or Incest

In an interview with Meet the Press, Chuck Todd asked Ben Carson about whether there should be exceptions for abortion, such as in cases where babies are conceived as a result of rape or incest. He responded:

Rape and incest, I would not be in favor of killing a baby because the baby came about in that way. And all you have to do is go and look up the many stories of people who have led very useful lives who were the result of rape or incest.”

Less than 1% of all abortions are performed on women whose child was conceived from rape or incest. That means that if there were about a million abortions done in a year, fewer than 10,000 were done on rape and/or incest victims. This is one of the main things that abortion advocates use to justify keeping abortion legal, these relatively few cases where rape or incest victims become pregnant.

But even in those tragic cases of rape and incest, what does the baby have to do with it? It makes absolutely no logical sense to execute the baby in the womb just because he or she was conceived after the mother was raped. It makes about as much sense as saying that since a woman was murdered in cold blood, her 4-year-old boy should be killed. I mean, we wouldn’t want that child growing up motherless, so it would be for his own good to be taken out of this cold and heartless world.

It’s true that that case would be a tragedy. And it would be terrible for that little boy to have to grow up without a mother. But killing him doesn’t solve anything. As bad as his mother’s murder was, life would go on. He would eventually learn to cope with it. People have learned to cope with even more tragic events than that.

But even if he found it to be nearly impossible to deal with, that would not justify killing him, would it? Can you imagine the liberals’ retort in such a case? “So, you’re going to force that child to grow up motherless? You want to ‘protect’ that child so that he can be raised by a single father or have to go through the foster care system? Or, are you going to take care of him? Oh, what’s that? You can’t take care of him? You just want to ‘save his life’ to push an ideology. You people really are cold-hearted sons of …” You get the idea. They’ll think of anything to justify murdering people. It’s “for their own good.” And besides, it keeps an unwanted population at bay.
