Affirmative Action & The Politics Of Race-Baiting

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” – Winston Churchill

Allow me to tell a story. Imagine you are a student at a top university. You attend that school because you are the best at what you do. You had the best test scores, you had the most creative, and commanding entry essay, and you had the most extracurriculars. You are up for an internship that could change the course of your education, and thus your career. You are clearly the most qualified candidate, but you don’t get the internship. When you ask your professor why you were passed over, he tells you that it’s because you are white, and that the department wanted to have a more diverse program. Would that upset you?

Now, imagine you are a student in the same program, at the same university. You are really good at what you do, but you’re not the best. You are in the top 20% of your class! But you know there are others there who are more highly ranked. You apply for an internship, and you get it. Curious as to why a more qualified student didn’t receive the job, you ask your professor. He tells you that the reason you got the internship is because you’re black. Would that upset you?

Both of the above scenarios would upset me. On one hand, I am being short-changed because of my race, or rather because of the race of another. On the other hand, I am being told that my skill is irrelevant, and that my only qualification is my race. These are both extremely offensive concepts. This is affirmative action.

The modern leftist will tell you that we need affirmative action to help balance the scales. They will describe a time in which Americans were racially biased, and cruel. They will try to scare you. The problem with their theory is that it’s 2014, not 1950. We have moved far beyond the need for racial quotas. Once the need for affirmative action ended, the notion of selecting people based entirely on race became offensive, and racist. Affirmative action now represents the opposite of its original intent.

Given this, why do liberals still push affirmative action? Because it stirs up fear and racial resentment. In order to understand the why, one must first understand what is to be gained. What does fear and racial resentment gain liberals? It gets them votes. By telling minorities that conservatives want to turn back the clock by eliminating affirmative action, the Democrats incite fear. They convince minorities that if affirmative action is banned, we will be thrown back into the times of segregation. They then offer to protect, and support affirmative action, so long as we vote for them. It’s a vote gaining tactic.

The Democrats don’t care about minorities, or their advancement, they only care about winning. If they had any care for minorities, they’d agree that affirmative action is racist, and that it should be abolished.
