Unemployment Down While Labor Participation Rate at Record Low

We’ve seen this so many times during Obama’s reign. The only numbers that get publicized by the media are the unemployment numbers, which magically go down, despite the labor participation rate also going down.

What good are the unemployment numbers when they don’t factor in the dismal labor participation rate? The only thing they’re good for is stirring up the cheerleaders on the left. When the useless unemployment numbers are down, it’s because Obama’s “created” so many jobs. When the numbers are up, they’re either ignored by Democrat cheerleaders, or they’re blamed on the GOP for “destroying” jobs.

CNS News reported:

The number of Americans 16 and older who did not participate in the labor force climbed to a record high of 92,120,000 in June, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

This means that there were 92,120,000 Americans 16 and older who not only did not have a job, but did not actively seek one in the last four weeks.

That is up 111,000 from the 92,009,000 Americans who were not participating in the labor force in April.

In June, according to BLS, the labor force participation rate for Americans was 62.8 percent, matching a 36-year low. The participation rate is the percentage of the population that either has a job or actively sought one in the last four weeks.

In December, April, May, and now June, the labor force participation rate has been 62.8 percent.

Before December, the last time the labor force participation rate sank as low as 62.8 percent was in February 1978, when it was also 62.8 percent. At that time, Jimmy Carter was president.

At no time during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton or George W. Bush, did such a small percentage of the civilian non-institutional population either hold a job or at least actively seek one.

While the number of Americans not in the labor force increased, the unemployment rate dropped — from 6.3 percent in April to 6.1 percent in June.

The only way a government can create jobs is by growing itself. But if the government really wanted to do something about unemployment and the labor participation rate, they’d make themselves smaller. They’d get out of the way.

Our government has no interest in seeing a vibrant economy, full of productive small businesses. They care only about making themselves bigger and more powerful. And they sell that to naïve Americans by promising to “create jobs.”

Hodges, your neocon fascist ramblings are getting boring, and do impugn your character. “govt getting out of the way” has been tried several times, all with the same result: nothing happens. It really is basic econ 101b – producers will not produce unless there is demand, and to start up demand it is totally logical and correct for government intervention to do it.

And that’s working so well that more people have stopped looking for jobs than those who have found one for 49 out of the last 50 months.

Govt. getting out of the way? Privatize everything and no one can afford anything. Economic failure. Govt. provides what private enterprise can’t – affordability of essential services. Privatization means profits.
Do you want Fed Ex to deliver all of your mail?
How much would it cost for a meal if your restaurant had to hire private food inspectors?
Privatize law enforcement and only the rich will be protected.
It’s who you TRUST to run govt. Judging from the far right, most of them would be dragging down the rest of us to a 3rd world country.

So you would have the government run everything?
Cuba tried that. How would you like to live on $30 a month?
How does the government get roads built? They take bids from private companies instead of building them themselves. Why? It is less expensive.
Most 3rd world countries are government run, with little private enterprise. That is why they stay 3rd world countries.

The government does not create jobs. The government borrows money, or confiscates it from job producers, or prints it and hires someone to do something unproductive.
A job is created when a business or an entrepreneur hires someone to help them make a profit. With the profit they can expand, or save it (banks then lend it out) or they and their employees buy other products produced by other firms and it snowballs into a thriving economy.
If you think that government can create jobs, just go start up a government and hire people, pay them, tax them, provide services and see what happens. Idiots.

A good article on why government spending and government hiring does not create jobs.

How convenient those increasing employment numbers when they exclude those whose unemployment benefits expired after 99 weeks.

  • jhforsythe

Government does not create jobs. Less participation in the labor market when the government does not count those who have dropped out means lower rate of unemployment. DUH! The numbers are fraudulent.

If you have been unemployed more than a year,

you count as “discouraged”, a case less severe.

    Do not go ballistic

    You are a statistic.

No more unemployed, but a discard. So there!

how is it that there are now over 93 million people out of work and the lap dog media cant add the numbers that 93 million out of 300 million is almost 1/3rd of the country out of work, and how many of those 300 million are just kids and don’t work anyway, so if the true numbers were published it would probably be around 40% of the actual work force that is out of work.

Don’t worry, when the O gets his way, he will have 90+ million potential brownshirts to draw from. Fortunately for the rest of us, they will mostly be: 1. Too lazy to fight. 2. Not know how to fire a weapon and not willing to maintain it (he he). 3. All coming out of shit holes like Chicago,LA,San Fran, Detroit and the like so it will be easy to close in on them and eliminate them. 3. Have to enroll in a union which will take time to negotiate because when they discover that some will have to lose something for others to get something, they will not be able to resolve or agree on anything! 4. Said Union will need uniforms which will come from China because we don’t make garments here anymore and the Union will likely oppose non-Union made uniforms and further, since such uniforms come from China it will take time to get hear and be held at customs because the material contains lead. And lets not forget Cali with prop65 where everything causes cancer (WHAT a CONUNDRUM THAT WILL BE). So you see, We have nothing to worry about unless of course you believe in the farce of “Global warming” (oop’s, climate change)…
