In Chicago, Land of Liberal Gun Control, 911 is Made Impotent
Once an idea sinks its claws into the Liberal mind, it is nearly impossible to change that idea. The mind should be an open courtyard, allowing ideas to confront preconceived notions, and sometimes replace them with new, more refined truths. We are all guilty of stubbornness; but those on the Left are the epitome of intransigence.
According to CBS Chicago,
“Starting this week, Chicago police are changing their responses to 911 calls. They’ll no longer come right away to reports of things like criminal damage to property, vehicle thefts, garage burglaries, or other crimes in which the suspect is no longer on the scene, and the victim isn’t in immediate danger.”
Many are outraged by this decision. Police Supt. Garry McCarthy responded to the outrage with this statement:
“I don’t mean to be flippant here, because I’ve been the victim of a burglary at least three or four times…I’d rather have the officer on street, where he can prevent the shooting.”
According to the Washington Post, in 2012:
“Since Jan. 1, Chicago police have recorded 2,364 shooting incidents and 487 homicides, 87 percent of them gun-related. Shootings have increased 12 percent this year and homicides are up 19 percent.”
Garry McCarthy said the problem is gun violence in the streets:
“Seizing guns, he said, offers limited benefit, with Chicago already claiming guns at a rate three times greater than Los Angeles and nine times higher than New York.”
Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, yet the city counts hundreds of gun related deaths each year. Chicago is a perfect example of gun restriction failing to curb violence. If you remove guns from the citizenry, only criminals will have them; because laws will do absolutely nothing to stop a criminal from getting a gun in any way he needs.
Now, Chicago’s extraordinary violence problem is putting such duress on the police force that they can no longer perform their duties in regard to lesser crimes. According to CBS, the police will no longer respond immediately to crimes where the victim is not in immediate danger. This is all so the police can be on the streets to protect Chicago from all of the gun violence.
The problem is so pervasive because–until December–Illinois banned concealed carrying of guns. Until this past December, Illinois was the only state not to have concealed carry laws. Mounds of evidence definitively show the benefit of concealed carry. When anyone might be armed, criminals are less apt to take the chance on a crime. In addition to that, there is a track record of those with concealed guns stopping crimes and attempted shootings.
So, if extreme gun control does nothing to curb gun related violence, and concealed carry laws are proven to help reduce crime and violence, why would Chicago be so unwilling to jump off the gun control bandwagon. Because the concept of gun control is a vote-getter; it makes the Left seem like bleeding hearts. The idea of, and power behind the concept of gun control has sunk its claws into the minds of the Left, and no amount of evidence will change their belief.
If those on the Left were not so closed minded, Chicago might be a much safer place.
