This isn’t the first time peaceful Muslims have been outraged by this particular magazine in Paris. The editor Charb and cartoonist Cabu for Charlie Hebdo had gotten used to the death threats and the rioting to the point that one of them had a personal bodyguard, one of the victims in the attack. CBS reported:
Paris police say three gunmen attacked the office of a French satirical newspaper in Paris on Wednesday, killing at least 12 people and leaving at least as many more injured.
CBS News’ Elaine Cobbe reports that, according to witnesses, two armed and masked men walked into the headquarters of the Charlie Hebdo magazine and opened fire in the entrance hallway, killing people as they saw them.
French President Francois Hollande appeared at the scene of the shooting quickly and confirmed that the hunt for the suspects was ongoing.
Paris prosecutor’s spokeswoman Agnes Thibault-Lecuivre confirmed 12 people were killed. Among the dead were two men who went by the pen names: Charb — the editor and a cartoonist as well — and the cartoonist Cabu, Thibault-Lecuivre confirmed.
Two police officers were also among the dead, including one assigned as Charb’s bodyguard after prior death threats against him, a police official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.
They were armed with Kalashnikov rifles and are also believed to have had a rocket-propelled grenade.
In one video clip, the attackers are heard to shout: “We have avenged the prophet.”
They are believed to have called out the victims by name.
A spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor says the editor and a cartoonist for the satirical newspaper, who went by the pen names Charb and Cabu, were among the 12 people killed in the attack.
Radio France chief executive Mathieu Gilet announced on Twitter that a contributor, Bernard Maris, was another of the victims.
Two police officers were also among the dead, including one assigned as Charb’s bodyguard after prior death threats against him.
Some 20 people have also been injured, at least four seriously.
After the killing, the gunmen calmly return to their getaway car and shouted: “We have avenged the Prophet Mohammed, we have killed Charlie Hebdo.”
The vehicle was later found abandoned, and is being examined by forensics teams.
Another video taken from the top of a building near the magazine’s offices, shows a firefight in the street below.
One of the gunmen can be heard screaming “Allah”, as they level their weapons and a series of gunshots ring out.
A dramatic image has also been published of two men dressed in black standing either side of a vehicle, pointing their weapons at a police car.
According to reports, three officers had initially arrived on pushbikes, but left when they realised how heavily-armed the raiders were.
The French cops were apparently unarmed when they came to the scene. Why am I not surprised?
I know this isn’t really the best time to harp on the French for their insecurity about guns, but if there had been some more confidently armed people there, they could have stopped the attack or at least been able to kill the attackers at some point. These murderers didn’t seem to mind what the laws were in that country. They had Kalashnikovs and a grenade launcher. If this isn’t an example illustrating the dire need to be a heavily armed populace, then I don’t know what is.
