Vice President Joe Biden is one that is definitely known for his gaffes. Sitting in front of a fireplace in a Google+ “hangout” on Thursday, he attempted to push the Obama administration’s gun policy agenda. Like a good Socialist, he attempted to change the tone of the debate by stating, “I don’t view it as gun control. I view it as gun safety.” He then went on to say that “A shotgun will keep you a lot safer … than the assault [weapon] in somebody’s hands who doesn’t know how to use it.”
Biden took more than half an hour to talk to people in the hangout. He then gave us his definition of the Second Amendment:
“My view is that it is totally a guarantee, not negotiable, that I’m able to own a weapon for sporting purposes as well as for my own protection, but there should be rational limits on the type of weapon” needed for protection or sports, he said.
“There is no sporting need that I’m aware of to have a magazine that holds 50 rounds – not that I’m aware of, and I’m a sportsman,” Biden said.
Biden didn’t quote the Second Amendment for obvious reasons and that would be because no stated purpose of the Second Amendment has one thing to do with sporting purposes. Heck, he didn’t even mention hunting in his definition, which is the normal route liberals go to when trying to redefine what the Second Amendment is clearly about. Since Biden wouldn’t actually quote the Second Amendment and since there may be those reading this who don’t know how it reads, here it is:
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
By the way, notice there is nothing in there about hunting or sports shooting. There is reference to using arms “being necessary to the security of a free state.” Of course, Biden and Obama will never let that comes from their lips though. Perhaps Biden doesn’t need just an education on the Constitution, but also a course in the history of why our Founders put forth Second Amendment.
Biden attempted to make as though he welcomed discussion, but the things he put forward are telling. He said, “That’s one of the reasons I wanted to be in this chat,” Biden said. “There’s tens of thousands of people listening to this. I don’t care which side of the issue you’re on. Pick those things that you think can have a positive impact. You don’t agree with me on assault weapons … [but] you may agree with me on background checks, making them universal. Make your voices heard.”
Notice he didn’t include those of us who would tell him to keep the federal government out of the issue and stop infringing on the Second Amendment. He does not want to hear talk about removing “Gun Free Zones” from public schools or other buildings, thus allowing people to legally exercise their Constitutionally protected rights to defend themselves and others. He made no mention of the fact that any and all gun control laws are a clear violation of the Second Amendment. The reason he doesn’t mention those is because he isn’t interested in them.
But most telling was his response when it came to a question posed about California facing and earthquake or other parts of the country facing a hurricane and how to defend themselves. “If you want to keep people away during an earthquake, buy some shotgun shells,” Biden said.
In fact, Biden said, “A shotgun will keep you a lot safer, than an assault weapon in someone’s hands who doesn’t know how to use it, even one who does know how to use it.”
“You know,” he said pointing his finger at the camera, “it’s harder with an assault weapon to hit something than it is a shotgun, OK? If you want to keep people away during an earthquake, buy some shotgun shells.”
Quickly, I think shotguns are excellent for use for home defense. There is no question about that. But notice what he is specifically pointing out. He claims that it is harder to hit something with a semi-automatic rifle (something he calls an assault weapon, which it is not) than it is a shotgun. That is not necessarily true. Biden includes those who know how to use a semi-automatic rifle and those who don’t as equals.
Additionally, he talks about a double-barreled shotgun. Now consider you have a group of people coming to your home in a disaster situation and consider that they are armed or even not. If you have a double barreled shotgun that means you get two shots before you have to reload. I’d say you better make them count, because if anyone is desperate enough for what you have they are going to take you out.
Consequently, old Joe must not have taken into account that the Department of Homeland Security doesn’t consider weapons that fire 5.56 NATO ammunition, like the AR-15, as “assault weapons.” Rather, in a solicitation for more of these weapons by DHS, they are referred to as “select fire firearm suitable for personal defense.” In other words, they are personal defense weapons.
However, the point is that Joe Biden, in this hangout, completely misrepresented the Second Amendment, a portion of the very Constitution he swore, just days ago, to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.” Mr. Biden, take a good look in the mirror. With claims like you made during this interview, you Sir, are a domestic enemy of the United States Constitution.
